    Angry Rant about WM devices

I'm very fond of WM6; in both its standard and pro incarnations I find it works very well. Most of the devices that I've experienced that run it are well assembled, and pleasingly designed. Hell, I spent my own cash on a SIM-free HTC Touch Dual, and haven't regretted it. That said, WHY THE HELL DO SO MANY MANUFACTURERS PROVIDE THE DAMNED THINGS WITH ONLY 64MB RAM??? My TD's got a healthy 128, and runs fine, and the only one in the HTC range that doesn't have at least that is the S730 (which is by far the most sluggish). That said, Samsung, Eten, Asus all appear to have this miserly reluctance to equip their devices with a decent bamount of RAM, and it cripples the machines. I've had other issues with Glofiish M810s, but the killer is that they are so damned slow, and when you compare them to ther device that aren't it's clear where the disparity lies. I've been looking at getting a device for a director here, and was seriously considering the Asus M930 -

    - a thoroughly serious looking clamshell QWERTY device, only to FINALLY get a gander at the specs and realise that it had been gimped with 64MB RAM.

    Re: Rant about WM devices

Must say I agree with you, the WM6 (WM6.1) PDAs/phones are very nice. I'm looking at buying the new HTC Touch PRO in October when my contract runs out. I currently have a N95 and am unimpressed with the ease of use with regards to the OS and as such demoted it to an old pay as you go sim.

My current phone is an Orange m3100. Still running very well though have done some ROM upgrades. The best thing I like about these phones is them is that you can drop them and most of the time they just bounce but not break .

With regards to RAM limitations I was reading a few weeks ago that this was down to battery life. Using 128MB of RAM uses quite a bit more battery power than 64MB of RAM. Though I am unconvinced that this would make a massive difference as I have to charge my phone every day if not more.

The HTC Touch Pro I believe has a 528MHz processor and 288MB of RAM. These will hopefully speed things up but as for most other WM6 phones they all use slower processors apart from dedicated PDAs and the old MDA EXE from O2.

I have just had a Touch Pro delivered for a director at work, literally a few minutes ago; I have to say, it's an absolutely GORGEOUS looking device, whatever the functionality's like!

Performance isn't bad either - having no problem posting this on one! Actually, having just typed that there is a bit of lag for text entry in Opera. Still, wow!

Here are the specs of what the Phone has if anyone is intrested

    HTC Touch Pro details

Must say that I'm glad you like the phone. I am very interested in any information on how the buttons feel as this was a concern I was reading about a few months ago.

Looking forward to getting mine now but have a 2 month wait

    Re: Rant about WM devices

can't really go wrong with any of the HTC's. I've got a Kaiser and the diamond has just come out.

There is also the upcoming Sony X1(made by HTC) which has a VGA screen(only thing I miss from my kaiser) and is looking amazing. Due to come out in a few months from what I've heard.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

That looks quite nice, haven't been aware of it! The large icons on the screen and a keyboard, can't go wrong

Yeah, the icons work really well for jabbing with a fat finger Even smaller icons, links on webpages etc. work like a dream without really making an effort to target them precisely. I have to say though, the experience would be somewhat less enjoyable without the slide out keyboard (i.e. on the Diamond)

That's about the only reason I did not go for the HTC Touch Diamond, I need a keyboard.

I was speaking with someone in O2 on Tuesday who told me that lots of the HTC Touch Diamond had problems with overheating. Just hope this will not be the case for the HTC Touch Pro

Today it did get noticeably a little warm during the initial setup, partly because it was in my hand for a long time, partly because plenty of stuff was being installed/configured etc (it starts as a standard WinMo 6.1 installation, and the TouchFlo 3D interface and other HTC bits are extracted and installed on first boot.) After that, no problems with normal use. That said, this has ben based on only one day of use, so time will tell...

does the latest 6.1 give you the option to set apps to properly close and release memory etc, or does everything still just minimise to the background when hit the x button? If not, it's worth getting one of the many free small apps that allow this - keeps devices running much better when you dont have 10 apps eating resources that you dont even need running.

Not used WM6.1 but I use magic button 2.0 (2.1 does not work correctly on WM6.0). This is a free app.

My personal opinion on the X button is that you have to hold it for a couple of seconds to close the app and for me I'm too impatient. The magic button app is free and also gives you options on how individual programs are closed / minimised.

    Re: Rant about WM devices

The new Samsung I900 (Omnia) uses 6.1 and has a 5 Megapixel camera, GPS, Wifi and runs Windows Mobile 6.1. Really nice phone and the little black button on the front doubles as a touch pad style mouse pointer.

It takes a little while to boot first time but after that it is really fast in its menus and everything. Mind you even Blackberrys take a while to boot first time so its no biggie. Thinking on buying the Omnia soon.
