That doesn't make it a smartphone though. All that is built on LGs standard phone OS, not a smartphone system like Windows Mobile, Symbian, etc. Just like there is a difference between the SE smartphones and non smartphone handsets, even if the non-smartphone ones can do email, camera, video, GPS etc.

    Actually by definition it does

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...ition&ct=title

Anything beyond text, and phone calls and basic gaming is a smartphone really, such as playing music, taking photographs, browsing the net, sending email, watching video. Anything that makes it more like PC functionality makes it a smartphone.

You are identifying the difference between PDA like devices and regular phone devices, the term smartphone doesn't really exist any more in modern tech because nearly all phones are smartphones

    Re: LG Arena

But it does exist as far as the networks, manufacturers and retailers are concerned.

Sure it might just be marketing, but there is a subtle difference between smartphone and non-smartphone devices. Push email is one of the biggies, along with full contact, email and schedule syncs between device and server or PC.

LG do copy people, they didn't bring out this touchscreen tech, they didnt really do anything especially new with it and they didnt exactly innovate it.

    ***********************************
Ok i didnt know SE did touch screen phones bar the X1 and i admit it was flawed information, all companies copy people but i was mainly aiming it at apple since it cant of been a copy. Agreed?

No, it isnt because its not built on a windows mobile OS etc, its a flash based OS iirc and thats what makes it different to a smart phone and shouldnt be compared with them imo.
    **********************************************************************
I don't know...I bought a fairly decent point and shoot to take pictures. Bet I'm a trendsetter or something.....

I would guarantee my old 3.2mp Olympus digital camera takes better pics than your 8mp cameraphone
    ****************************************
I would probably agree with you there, i have a cannon SLR so really the quality difference is noticeable(alot). I bought this one because i dont take the slr with me everywhere and i have a phone with me most of the time, alot of the moments where i would of liked a camera i did but with this its alot better than pitiful 2mp phones etc. Quality of a phone camera will never be the same as a dedicated camera cause they have to fit it all into one little thing and keep costs down.
    *****************************************************************
Then decrease the quality of the software, make the phone less usable, remove the ability for a plethora of 3rd party apps, smash it up a bit in the looks department then they have an LG!
    **********************
Style is a personal taste and thats why i hate plain items like laptops, i like the added textures/colours etc and hence why apple dont interest me. Style of the renoir is quite good and so i dont see how smashing it up compares , 3rd party apps are where the iphone/touch thrive so thats one point for it but the lg renoir isnt that bad as it has games etc but imo thats not worth a part of the phone since its meant to call people. The quality of the software isnt bad, responsive/minimal lag and nothing else.... do you have the renoir? Do you have an iphone? Not meant to sound in a bad way but it seems you just like to say the renoir is bad, it has dolby support! and xvid so it wins in multimedia .

Ok im a lg fanboy slightly, most solid phone ive had is the lg u8130 that still goes and looks stylish now the renoir beats my friends tocco/ipod touch and some others so woo.

    Troll harder next time please
    ******************

I wasnt trolling, i commented on the arena as it looks good but i had a rant .

Seriously, WTF are you talking about?
So a RIM Blackberry isn't a smartphone, neither is an iPhone, or any high end Nokia devices.

The P series SE phones used Symbian, the software used in BASIC nokia phones, does that make them smartphones??

It is still based on an OS before the Flash OS FFS, otherwise it would be a very expensive rendering device. The Palm Pre is web OS oriented IIRC so that can't be a smartphone according to you

3rd party apps are where iPhone, winMobile, Java and symbian thrive, not a proprietary based OS (even my X1 supports retro flash games!). The point was the apps not the games, games get released everything anyway. I owned an iPhone for a month or so and ended up trading it in finding that the screen didn't give enough feedback when typing and I couldn't store enough music on it for my liking. I tried a renoir and found it night on horrible.

Not to mention modern WM devices, iPhone (probably the Nokia ones too) all have 3d graphics chips in for superior gaming.

Your phone does not win in multimedia, my x1 has support for mp3, wma, m4a, aac, xvid, divx, mp4, ogg and a variety more, not to mention streaming from youtube support and

You have dolby.......Maybe you should be clear on the KIND of dolby you have....
For LG's Renoir KC910, Dolby Mobile provides rich, vibrant audio with powerful bass for an exceptional music listening experience.

At the heart of Dolby Mobile for the Renoir KC910 is an integrated suite of audio processing technologies that includes:

Natural Bass: provides clean, powerful bass extension without artificial side effects
Sound Space for Headphones: adds spaciousness and impact to headphone listening from stereo content
High-Frequency Enhancer: reinforces the high-frequency effects that often suffer when music and other content is digitally compressed
    * This implementation and component technologies are specific to the Renoir KC910 phone only.

Note KC910 ONLY, not any other Renoir (if there are any)

Great.... I'll keep my A2DP and built in 3.5mm headphone jack thanks, means I can use my stereo bluetooth headset, my pc or just some normal speakers/headphones to play my music out of.

Gimicks are useless unless you provide a choice to use it with something actually useful, it's like you are putting a 3d display in a 3" screen, absolutely pointless as it's too small to be of any real quality or use.

risky advert.... recommends you walk across roads, and down street without taking your eye off your phone..... stupid imo, ive seen plenty of iphone users nearly getting run over because they are to busy showing off their "toy"

Ok, i give up on this bit.

The renoir supports java games, i have duke nukem on it!. But again, i agree that the renoir compatability isnt great but still supports a good few apps(which i dont need ).

I meant to aim this at the iphone, sorry. Your X1 costs a hell of alot more than the renoir i bet, may i ask how much you pay?.

Note KC910 ONLY, not any other Renoir (if there are any,)- No other renoir yet, new refresh is due but its only a slight change with black backing and a bit thicker(camera doesnt poke out asmuch) and manual cover gone.

Great.... I'll keep my A2DP and built in 3.5mm headphone jack thanks, means I can use my stereo bluetooth headset, my pc or just some normal speakers/headphones to play my music out of.

I agree, pointless feature on this as its not meant to be a multimedia device. The connection for the headphones is LG's one but it is an adaptor for 3pin so not bad and the same goes for SE walkmens they all use the stupid sony connection. Id happily stick with my sansa clip as the quality is only slightly better but i prefer it .

Gimicks are useless unless you provide a choice to use it with something actually useful, it's like you are putting a 3d display in a 3" screen, absolutely pointless as it's too small to be of any real quality or use.
I like how you had both the iphone and renoir, shows a better understanding . Did you find the same issue i had with the iphone? The touch isnt done by pressure its done by the other method(i dont know xD) so it didnt pickup my touch alot of the time, the renoir and i believe the arena use pressure method which means better response for me as i prefer that way.

What problem did you have the renoir? I found for the first few days it wasnt that great at speed and sometimes responsive but i updated the firmware(really easy) and it really felt like a different phone with really low lag. I messed around with the calibration on the phone for a few days and now i have it almost perfect, texting is a dream and i used to be slow at texting now im pretty fast catching up with my keyboard typing skills .

edit: Just a FYI i bought the renoir as a phone with an OK camera(better than most phones though) and for texting, it was the cheapest phone i could get so its win win for me .

The LG Renoir got a lot of good reviews, iirc.

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile...enoir-KC910/p1

    http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/lg-kc910-renoir.htm

In regards to the touch screen, the Renoir uses resistive touch screen technology (old school), whereas the iphone/g1/arena use capacitive (more fluid).

    Re: LG Arena

I paid £50 for my X1 on contract (around iPhone money though)

My main problem with the iphone was typing out text messages on it, the keyboard was too narrow for me for a full qwerty and didnt give much feedback so it was difficult to do at the same time as something else.

    Re: LG Arena

Got my arena today I have to admit so far I am very impressed. Screen quality is superb. The UI is great as well, very slick but does suffer from the occasional lag. Features wise, its packed. It can play divx/xvid and the video/sound quality is one of the best I've come across. Web browsing is pretty fast and email is really easy to set up.

I would put up a proper review with pics but uni exam revision has meant I don't have the free time , however its definitely worth considering if you are looking for a new touchscreen phone

Regardless of who used it first, apart from the Sony units, most of the LCDs in phones (touch or otherwise) are Konica Minolta units

    Re: LG Arena

I'm in the market for a new phone as my contract is up this month but am at a loss what to do. I'd like to keep it with 02 (as I'm using them to get discount home broadband by being a pay monthly customer). I want a decent phone for net access and GPS. I've been looking at the LG Arena (great screen as well 800x480 res like Touch HD), The Touch HD, Samsung i900, The Nokia 5800 and the iPhone.

I'm paying about £25 quid atm for my online 02 tariff. I'm thinking of switching to a lower tariff and getting the web bolt on as I'd like to surf the web so maybe pay about £30 a month. I'm going to Japan in May so was hoping I could use the GPS over there but don't want to pay roaming charges so if possible I'd download the maps and store it on the phone and do it offline so to speak.

I know this might be possible on the Nokia as it comes with the software to do so but I'm not sure if the other ones can?? HTC Touch being windows mobile probably can do. Not sure on the Arena as I read it can only install Java apps. Hmmm what to do guys? I've only really got till end of this month to sort something out as I'm in my last month of contract, but don't incidentally want to spend silly money on the handset upgrading. (Either that or I switch to SIM only tariff and upgrade when a decent phone comes out) Argh.

    Re: LG Arena

I know this a little OT but does anyone know any sites where i can get apps for the renoir, all i've got atm is the standard stuff from 3 and windows messenger.

On the phone itself, i like the renoirs camera and love texting with the on screen keyboard but the OS has room for improvement
