    itunes vs mediaplayer 11

My daughter has been braindrained to OZ and left me a few thousand pop tures recorded in mp4a (it says!)

I Have a HUGE pop juke box ALL recorded in .wma (var bit rate) and mp3 (abt 10% of them)

I find (trial and error - the ONLY way!) that SOMETIMES mediaplayer (on autoiplay) CAN play mp4as.
Also I can COPY them into my computer.

When they refuse to play (99% refuse to) and I hit the itunes button itunes wakes up warning that:

Regis settings used by itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing
This can happen as a result of installing other cd burning software
    Please reinstall itunes

    Question 1:
So if I do that what will itunes bugger up as tit for tat?

If I simply proceed it opens up itunes – able to play music in a very “itunes way” and highly selective.

For example it decides to open up sandie shaw “(puppet on a string) and can play all 19 songs of that album.

But FROM my .wma data base. It gets their names and durations right but describes each as mp4a and thinks each is more bytes than the wma file it is playing.

Why pick on poor Sandie shaw!

    Question 2:
How to get the mp4as into my juke box

    Question 3:
As I NEVER use ipod stuff, how much space will itunes WASTE if I download it?

    Question 4:
As it is ALREADY THERE (but for the bits it SAYS are deleted) is it even POSSIBLE for me to get back the space it is hogging?

Many thanks for your help and interest

be VERY certain about the file type

    "mp4" is AAC audio

"m4p" is copy-protected audio from the iTunes music store

the former should play fine with any modern media player

the latter requires itunes, full stop

for directhex or o dam moon?

Each file has a name .mp4a.

My daughter recorded them, so that is all I know!

Is itunes INCOMPATIBLY in CONFLICT with mediaplayer?
Or can I install poth for ripping cds and dvdx?
How much space and confusion will that waste?

    Da Moon riuz #1

    Maybe I should explain:
The music (mp4a) comes bequeathed to me on a dozen dvd multigigabyte DVDs

My taste does not coincide with my daughters, so I need to SELECT which songs to copy into my juke box.

Activating mediaplayer 11 in "autoplay" mode plays all the mp3 fikes and SKIPS all the mp4a files - denying me the chance to say if I WANT TO COPY THEM OR NOT.

So I have copied all the tunes I want (of the mp3s) and am left with thousands of mp4a songs - unheard. Mediaplayer will NOT play them off the dvd (except in ONE case it did - but ONLY one!)

    Advice please

when I copy an mp4a song (MPEG-4 audio) it copies it as a computer file.
When I try to play this computer file with anything but RealPlayer the computer hangs up PERMANENTLY saying "Windows: no disc in drive" and similar nonsense, against which even ctl-alt-del is no defence..
Itunes cannot play the copied-from dvd as seperate file song at all! Just sits there

I have 6000 such files to review (and copy to my juke box if I like them).
    Suggestions please!
I can GET them there - amongst the wma and mp3. The problem is then HOW to play them. (say on a playlist)

I have now discovered that RealPlayer will play the mp4a files.
    So why can't Mediaplayer 11 ?
Is it likely that version 12 WILL be able to?

media player has never been that great

realplayer is pretty sweet i used to use itunes and change my import options to everything to mp3 so i could put them on my mp3 player

now i still use itunes although it does run pointless processes constantly like ipodservice which is a pain if you have no ipod
