Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

I've just setup an exchange 2007 server (first time), and our company email currently resides on a pop3 server at an isp, is there a way to retrieve the email from the pop3 mailboxes and then deliver it too our exchange 2007 accounts?

I'm sure just using outlook on each users machine to connect to the pop3 mailboxes would be easier, but I've been asked to do it this way, I think its so our email gets stored on our server aswell.

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

I think the way we do it is everything goes to a catch all POP3 account on the server and Exchange 2003 picks it all up from there are distributes it based on the address it was sent to.

The other way is collecting email over SMTP.

As for how to set it up..... no idea

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

Having a catch all pop3 account wont be a problem.

I was under the impression that Exchange server 2007 does not support retrieving from a pop3 server out the box, I can't be the 1st person who has wanted to do it though.

I don't know if SBE is different but it can be done. There used to be a seperate download from MS to add the feature, but that was a few versions ago, I assumed they have integrated it by now.

Connecting Exchange Server to a POP3 Account

(Not tested it myself - I use Postfix - and I would use Fetchmail to do this - and that information is of absolutely of no use to you whatsoever - but the link might be!)

Other option is to omit the ISP and set up (or get setup) the MX records for the domain(s) to point to the IP address of the exchange server.

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

    two ways...

    1) by pop3 connector from a 3rd party to collect mail from your catch-all mailbox

    2) changing your domain name's MX to point at your ADSL/ WAN ip and allow port 25 traffic point at your exchange server.

way 2 is preferable as pop3 connectors don't properly process mail and where mail is BCC'd to people it usually doesn't end up with it's intended recipient.

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

Having thought about it some more I'd agree with GSS (and I mentioned it anyway) - get mail delivered directly to your mailserver - unless there is a specific reason why you need it to be stored at the ISP first.

(One reasons might be to take advantage of any spam filtering or AV they have.)

However I would recommend that you relay your outbound mail via your ISP - much much simpler.

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

If you don't have your own AV/ Spam filtering on your exchange server then SMTP relay to a email scanning service would be good..

Exchange Defender is one I know is excellent.....

I used to use that successfull for exchange 2003. There is no reason it won;t work with exchange 2007

Yes, but he was talking about a company website, so they wouldn't be using a Tiscali home type product... would they??

But picking up mail from a POP3 server to feed into another mail server is still a kludge - apart from the reasons I gave earlier, the only other reason to do it is if the mailserver isn't running 24x7 - if it is then direct delivery is really the best way - which is why mailservers like Exchange and Postfix don't directly support POP3 collection.

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

pop3 collection has its faults - ask trig about the fun he had with his.

depending on the size of your enterprise , you may want to use an enternal supplier that offers antivirus/antispam and SMTP spooling , just in case your exchange server goes offline.

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

one of the big issues you will have is large emails getting stuck. If you have your pop3 retreaver set to check every 60 seconds and a large email is sent to one of your users it can take longer than 60 seconds to download the mail from the pop: server. This causes a loop and the mail gets stuck behind this loop. You can set it to 2 or 3 mins but that can be a long wait for an important email.

Re: Retrieving pop3 email to Exchange server 2007.

60 seconds is a bit frequent....

the pop3 connector on sbs2k can't be set lower than about 5 or 15 mins ! ( its only supposed to be a stopgap measure untill you set up real email )
