    recommend some website design software

can anyone recommend some easy to use website design software?

a mate has asked me "how easy/hard would it be to put together a website for my football team?"

i know there are various programs that will assist in setting up a basic website & require no knowledge of HTML, but having never set up a website myself, i don't know which ones are any good

any & all info greatfully received, cheers
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is

I hate to recommend it as it creates rubbish HTML but Microsoft FrontPage does the job if you're completely new to the web development scene

When I first started writing HTML, I used Notepad.

I now use Dreamweaver, although I still do most of it in code view - I always prefer to write my own code, rather than the program doing it its own way!

    Microsoft Visual InterDev here

Handcoded all the way, but it's mostly VBScript, and there aren't many WYSIWYG programs that do it for you...

Total overkill for basic HTML sites...go for Frontpage (it's cheaper than Dreamweaver and fairly user friendly and comprehensive).

    Adobe Photoshop.

Yes I know it's for drawing pictures but the best way (for me) is to draw a pic of how I want the website to look, getting all the buttons and stuff in place and then use the slice tool and use 'Save for web' which cuts the slices up into nice little tables which I then drop into dreamweaver to tidy it up.

I use dreamweaver but I dunno how it compares with other programmes as it is the only one I've used, aprt from Notepad which I started of with, just using basic HTML. Dreamweaver is quite easy to use, the basic controls a pretty easy to get hold of and theres also much more complicated stuff you can use. I use the WYSIWYG side of it tho, as I'm not really that good at coding.

Dreamweaver is good too... it depends on the complexity of the site and level of skill. I do my site in Dreamweaver.

another cry for editplus.. raw text pwns.

editplus, and firefox with the web developer toolbar ? beautiful environment that is not bloated like dreamweaver, does not produce rubbish html. it can be configured to edit html/text files over ftp directly on your webserver... sexy. but not the best thing for your users to edit the live pages !

The code view in dreamweaver mx is easily as good as editplus which is my secondary app if i don't have access to dreamweaver. The database connections functionality in dreamweaver makes it easy to quickly look up that column name you were after without having to fire up phpmyadmin as well. Dreamweaver only produces dodgy HTML if you use the WYSIWYG view, in code view it is one of the best tools out there. Unfortunately it's quite expensive and takes up a lot more system resources than editplus

personally I like being able to download an editplus trial - small dowload - anywhere I am in the world and bang I am editing. Not all 'puters have dreamweavzor on it, and it is a bandwidth commitment to get it..

but development environments are really personal. its what gets it done for you. Still.. I think this thread has covered most of the decent apps.
