    Re: Best free antivirus software?

Somewhat surprisingly, I've found Microsoft Security Essentials to be, on the whole, very good - perhaps even more surprising is that it scored highly in a comparison of both free and paid antivirus programs.

    Re: Best free antivirus software?

I like to use Avira or MSE, can't really decide which one I prefer but they both do their job well.

    Re: Best free antivirus software?

The good thing about Microsoft Security Essentials is that it includes the Windows Defender functionality (i.e. anti-spyware), so you probably don't need MSE + %anti-spyware of your choice here% combinations like so many people recommend.

    Re: Best free antivirus software?

I'm actually quite happy with Microsoft Security Essentials, been trialling it at work as a replacement for McAfee Corporate edition, after McAfee failed on no less than 5 occasions to catch a virus.

Main downside is there's no proper corporate edition, to allow central updating and we're currently limited to testing it on 10 machines only.

While MSE isn't meant to be used in corp-environments, as far as I know, WSUS does allow you to push out updates for it.

The corporate equivalent would be Forefront Client Security I'd guess.

    Re: Best free antivirus software?

+1 for MSE. And most importantly, common sense. And perhaps something like Sandboxie (when you really want to run something and are not sure about the source); it redirects all changes that a program makes to a folder (sandbox). A virtual machine is the next level I guess.

I was AVG until it randomly started minimizing full screen applications then I switched to Avast which is great once you have switched the sounds off

I usually use my PC with the speakers off, so suddenly hearing "Virus database updated" made me jump.

    Re: Best free antivirus software?

I think Avira is better than AVG. I`m using Avira anti virus since last 2 or 3 years but it never create a single problem for me.
