Unless you have 98 already of course.
That was for my original el cheapo laptop for school, I'm gonna get a decent one. I lost my 2000 disc anywho. I love 2k.

Will prob. dual boot linux and SBS. Just need it primarily for .NET @ school

I'm starting to think ubuntu is too easy. Might moe to Gentoo, sophisticated by not quite as raw as Debian.

true, but if you're limited to 64MB RAM then the benefits of XFCE start to show through...!

gentoo not as raw as debian ??? what are you talking about ??? define raw, you can't get much more than being built from the ground up.
    It is Inevitable.....

Too easy? Grow up - Ubuntu (based heavily on Debian, don't forget) gives you all the customisation that you could want. Or would you prefer things not to work out of the box? In which case I'd recommend Open BSD

Try Debian Sarge. Or, if you want to use Gentoo, *please* use the binaries. There is no benefit in compiling your own apps - unless you like frustration, long waits, etc...

Its worth mentioning that the Debian package repository is getting a little messy, compared to some of the more modern distros. Additionally their idea of "free" may get on your nerves. E.g. if you want Sun Java, ATI/Nvidia drivers, you have to go out and find them yourself. Here something like Gentoo does have the upper hand

to be fair, nvidia drivers are part of debian - ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/pool/...phics-drivers/

the license on them isn't Free free, but does allow for unequivocal repackaging and redistribution

on the other hand, try reading Sun's license. there are reasons it's not included in debian - however, the java-package tool is in there, which takes a .bin you've downloaded from sun after agreeing to their licensing terms, and creates a .deb from the result
