    Nero not recognising my CDRW

    Hi there,

I've just gone to burn a CD using Nero (and I've used it many a time before) and all of a sudden there is only the "image recorder" in the CD recorder list so all it can do is image files. This is a copy of Nero that came with the CDRW (a Liteon) and as I've said it has worked for ages but just suddenly has stopped. I've checked that the drive still works, it shows up in My Computer, has no problems in device manager and burnt a CD sucessfuly through iTunes! I've uninstalled and reinstalled Nero a couple of times and used the Clean tool from Nero inbetween but still no luck! I'm reluctant to have to pay a truckload of cash to update the software from Nero as I think it is something of a rip off so if there are no suggestions as to how to fix it then pointing me in the direction of a free CD burning application a bit like Nero would be great

    Thanks,

    Pickers

Have you installed any other CD/DVD burning/tools/ripping/etc related software recently?

Try other cd burner software to check if its neros fault or the drives fault.
I use Stomp , its pretty good, slow but copies anything that I throw at it.

I had a cd drive a few years ago that was working fine one day and then stopped working as a copier. It would only read cds. I think it was just too old. A friend had the same thing happen to him so I just put it down to a scuppered drive and I bought a new one.

Do you have a cd reader in your system as well? Try uninstalling the cd reader and nero and then install nero with just the writer fitted, i've seen problems in the past where a reader has gone wonky and causes issues with the writer

Just thought, use the built in cd burner if u are using windows XP.
Means you will find out if the drive is still capable of burning...

At least you know that its Nero's fault that it aint working...
Try another type of software, it will probably work.
Download the latest demo version of Nero and check it too.

Okay, so with the CD drive uninstalled the CDRW appears as an available recorder however dissapears again as soon as the CD is installed! Very strange this should suddenly happen, so it is definately a Nero problem. A fix would be great but if not a suggestion of a good (preferably free or very cheap!) piece of software similar would be great. Any ideas? Stomp seems to not be downloadable off their website anymore.

Deepburner, but i still think Nero is the best. What version do you have?

Also, did you instal SP2 around the time it started to go tits? I know there are issues for nero. Have you tried patching and updating nero?

clone cd is really good for copying everything. I think they stopped developing it so it might be freeware. Here

CloneCD only did CD's last time i used it.

EDIT ; its only CD's he wants, so might be worth checking out. But it only really a copier - can't build your own CD structure.

Here is some other free burners.

Until u get it working, you can create images with nero and burn them with clone cd.

What version of Nero are you using and how new is your burner? If its a new burner and an old version of Nero then its probably just not supported. You'll have to update or get a newer version of Nero.
