Had it with quicktime. What else can i use for .mov files

As title really. To say I'm totally ****ed off with quicktime would be an understatement. Every time I play something it doesn't play any sound and if I try to use the seek or volume bars it causes explorer to screw up and my system to crash. If I open a window in Firefox that has a .mov file in it, it will crash Firefox. I've really had it with it. Is there somthing else out there that will play quicktime content and will act as a quicktime plugin for firefox?

Ive tried something called "Quicktime Alternative" but from what I can tell it just installs an older version of QT and doesn't solve the problem.

I run it at the moment, but not necessarily for the jobs you want it for.

.mov files - easy. many apps can open the quicktime container format

the problem lies with the codecs - there's no way of playing (for example) the popular sorrenson3 codec other than by getting it from apple

2nd vote for qtalternative. Also realalternative is good for real media player audio files.

Media Player Classic will play them, even the MPEG-4 ones. but you have to have QT installed, and it doens't handle VR files.

Another vote for Quicktime Alternative paired with Media PLayer Classic... Works great and I've never had a problem with it.

but it doesn't have support for a number of proprietary codecs, including sorrenson3 (the most popular codec used in quicktime files)

should be fine for modern MP4 quicktime files though

I'm using Quicktime Alternative with no probs in he latest build of Firefox. Normally avoid quicktime myself but a lot of websites that have movie trailers etc require it and I accidentally came across the alternative.

stupid question - but have you tried totally removing and then re-installing quicktime? sounds like more of an installation problem than anything else..

As for alternatives VLC is great but as hex said it doesn't support every codec..I guess one way around it would be to keep quicktime installed but actually play the files with VLC? Not sure if that would work, as I play all my .movs in OSX...but I guess it should.

Spud1, VLC uses the codecs it's installed with, not any on the system, so installing Quicktime won't give VLC the ability to play non-MP4 quicktime files.

Ok, thanks for all your replies guys. Last time i tried QT Alternative it didn't solve the problem. However I installed it just now, tried it and it still wouldn't work. I then removed my Forceware 85.96 Drivers and reinstalled them and somehow it seems to work now. The real quicktime still doesn't work however though I'm not concerned about this since the QTA app works now for some reason.

Anyway thanks again for all your input on this issue.
