AVI is but a container format, there is a lot of different thing you can put inside it. I'll assume you want it in DivX or Xvid though

    Personal favourite is AutoGK http://www.autogk.me.uk/

nice and simple and gives good results. I use Xvid and MP3.

for loads of tutorials and massive forums, http://www.doom9.org is the place to go

You should get My Movies if you dont have it already for Media Center.

I use Dvd Shrink to rip my DVDs but obviously this does not reduce the files a lot like you get ripping them in DivX using AGK.

You basically need to work out your trade off between size & quality.

So basically i need to rip the movie with dvd shrink (i use it currently with my psp and it works well) and then encode it into xvid (im guessing thats better than divx as its open source)

Also that media center thing looks good too.

Now all i need is a is a core 2 quadro

You can rip is with anything you like. I use DVD Decryptor, it's pretty quick. I assume DVD Shrink will let you do a straight rip of just the main title, no point in wasting time ripping the whole disk, when you are throwing away the extras anyway.

DVD Decryptor will let you pull indivitual titles, process it on the fly to remove audio and subtitles streams, and you can select particular chapters too and loads more besides

Yep, dvd shrink lets you rip out all the rubbish to just leave the movie with the sound.
