    New bike or upgrade?

    Hi All,
I've been commuting to work (10 miles or so) on my Trek 7.2 Hybrid. I'm now looking at a job a bit further away (20 miles or so).

Does anyone have any experience with hybrids?

Am I better looking at upgrading some of the parts on this one, or looking at more of a racer type bike? I'm finding that I seem to max out the hybrid at 20 mph or so, so I guess I'll need better/more gears at the very least, then better brakes etc etc etc...

Road bikes (which people tend to call 'racers') tend to have top gears of around 50/12 or 52/12, which is very close to the 48/11 you already have. You may want to focus on increasing the rate at which you pedal (and reduce the torque you apply). I tend to find that I only drop into my 48/11 downhill.

To increase speed, you can look to getting a riding position with a flatter back although it can be a compromise in terms of comfort. Skinnier tyres at higher pressures are a common route although there's some dispute as to how much difference it really makes.

Over longer distances, I'd look to a good set of shoes and clip in pedals.
