    Running shoes

    Hey,

I'm going to start running a couple of evenings a week, just around my local streets and at a nearby park. I'm after footwear suggestions but this may be a habit I fail to keep up so I don't want to spend a fortune! Equally I don't want to spend too little and do my knees in.

Good pair of shoes goes a long way, avoiding tarmac saves the knees also.

I'd try going to up & running if you have one near by. Last time I went they gave good advice, which you can take and look elsewhere for cheaper shoes.

try SWEATSHOP too. If you don't like the shoes they sell you, you can take them back, after use

    Re: Running shoes

I would recommend looking for a good pair on clearance, maybe last years model. Saves a bit of cash.
Also look to buy a pair of good insoles. They dont cost a fortune but give you extra padding and bounce...save those knees!

This is actually good advice, I do this with my own running shoes. I prefer to stick with Mizuno (personal preference after having crippling shin splints from New Balance) and once I know there's a new model out I bag the previous year's one for a lot less.

Go to a shop that has a treadmill and camera set up to measure your gait, then you can be tested with different shoes to find ones that won't injure you. Whatever the price, a decent pair of running shoes is worth it.

Best advice on this thread! For anyone serious about running this is what you must do. Which brand and type will work for you is a personal thing. If you are strapped for cash then get measured and get several reccomendations then shop around. Little bit cheeky seeing how you're taking up their time but those places rarely (if ever) offer the greatest prices.

Just get something that fits and feels comfy in the shop, you don't need to spend alot.

Asics make brilliant running shoes. Your local sports direct will have some cheapish ones.

Nearly all of my friends that do running swear by them.

Using Asics kyano gel's here - they were around ~£80 but they have been the best quality running shoes i've gone through.

    Re: Running shoes

It's worth finding out if you have underpronated or overpronated feet (you can find out by stepping on a sheet of paper with wet feet). Different shoes are targeted for different types of feet; based on my findings I went for a pair of Asics Gel-1150s which didn't break the bank, and got me through a half-marathon last year.

I went to Sweatshop myself to find out what running style i had & bought a pair of Asics from them, having tried on other brands

I swear by Hi-tech Silver Shadows (Good old days) from JJB for £25 & on Ebay they are cheap and comfy and provide good support for your foot. The Army have been using them for the past few years.

Asics Gel-1120 - Brilliant, very light for long runs.

    Re: Running shoes

Never skimp on running shoes. I know so many people who have damaged their knees wearing the wrong footwear. The Nike Store can make you custom shoes, that complement your stance. Most of us don't stand straight.

Where possible run on grass rather than concrete too. :-)
