    What a great thread,
I was 19st about 12 months ago and i was disgusted with myself. I joined a local bootcamp and met a load of great people who I now call good friends, I am down to 15st and do bootcamp 4 times a week and 5 a side 1 night a week and I love it, It was the best thing I ever done starting to get in shape.

Let's see... Today I trained arms. So that was five sets of hammer curls, five sets of tricep extensions, two sets on single arm preacher curls then four sets of french curls, two sets of T curls and then I burned out on tricep kickbacks because my triceps are far weaker than my biceps and I'm trying to slowly level the playing field.

After that I got some protein in and did 45 minutes work with the heavy bag for some cardio. Needless to say, I have a fair few more aches and pains than when I woke up this morning! Thankfully I've only got an hour of cardio to do tomorrow but I might double that depending on how quickly I recover.... and my own levels of sadomaschism

And today I am feeling crippled after 3.5 miles, but that's largely because I have bruised ribs (due to an unfortunate car/wall interface event on Sunday).

Back out on the trails today, the hills were killing me though; ended up walking a couple of times.

Re: Motivate Me: The HEXUS Excercise thread : post your pain ;-)

Good job, trail running is, in my experience, harder than road running. It's better for the joints too. Doesn't matter if you have to walk as long as you keep moving forward.

I did a 1/2 marathon and went off way too fast and ended up exploding and needing to stop, so I signed up for another the following weekend. As I've not done much exercise since the end of the triathlon season I decided I should probably put in a workout in between, so I headed out on the mountain bike and managed to stack it whilst doing 20mph, resulting in this:

I still did the 1/2 marathon (and nearly PBd), but the day afterwards my leg was a bit sore, so I popped in to the walk in centre where the nurse told me (to paraphrase slightly) that I was an idiot. No more exercise for me for a bit

Well, true, but if I wasn't an idiot I wouldn't be doing this exercise stuff anyway. Had a go at swimming yesterday as that's not really exercise per se, and I've knackered my shoulder too it appears.

Re: Motivate Me: The HEXUS Excercise thread : post your pain ;-)

Tanking off a bike at any speed will take out most of your limbs for a week or two - there's really no way to avoid all of them getting hit by or against something. I had an ... interesting .. meeting with a car back at the end of August, which left me sore all over for about a week, and bothered my left ribs until the last week or so (I got better end of it - she lost most of her windscreen as far as I can tell ).

Since I only ever bike for the commute to work at the minute I replaced the road bike with a lovely low step-through city commuter/shopper; a little bit slower, giving me a little more time to react to idiots As a result I've not really had any good run outs over the last few months: need to get back on the walls and maybe throw some swimming into the mix....

First race today. 10k trail race in Betws-y-coed. Managed to hit my aim of less than an hour (59:41) despite lack of training the past couple of weeks, well chuffed.

Re: Motivate Me: The HEXUS Excercise thread : post your pain ;-)

Hello all, thought I would join in the conversation!

So, a little backstory: I played rugby at university (flanker - blind or open depending on who was playing), do some snowboarding in winter and did the odd other thing here and there, but wouldn't really have considered myself to be very 'fit' outside of that. One of my friends asked me in late April 2013 if I wanted to run the 2014 London Marathon... so of course I said yes despite not really doing a lot of running, and certainly never anything long distance!

We started by signing up to a 10k in July and a half in October to give us some goals, then went ahead with the NHS Couch to 5K running podcast (http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k.aspx), which I highly recommend, and that got us comfortably running 30 minutes/5K in less than 9 weeks. We did a session every other day so got through it quicker than they suggest. After that, we had hardly any time before the 10k (slightly misjudged when to book the 10k for), so, probably stupidly, just decided to up our 5K run to 10K in training one day... we managed it without injuring ourselves and were just about ready for the 10K. Fortunately we did have enough time to properly train for the half marathon and breezed through that. The marathon itself went fairly well, though I did step on a water bottle near Tower Bridge and have to run/walk the rest (no way was I giving up after so much training!), but I finished it and got myself a much needed leg massage, a pile of food and about 7 cups of tea. I did have a swollen knee for a few days but it was worth it.

My main piece of advice for anyone thinking of doing it would be watch your step! Most of the water bottles were fairly unavoidable as people had just decided to throw them all over where people were running rather than at the sides.

I actually didn't lose much weight in training (wasn't really overweight to begin with though), but I think that's because I lost fat and gained muscle. I did lose little bits of fat here and there, but my legs showed the most change - absolutely rock solid highly defined muscle with no obvious fat anywhere. My pulse also gradually dropped and ended up happily in the 40s. Now I run a lot less (not much chance of a social life with a 6 day a week training plan!) but have taken up mountain biking during the spring/summer/autumn, have been doing a few of these obstacle runs and am thinking of maybe trying a bit of trail running. Definitely caught the fitness bug!

Edit: Oops, sorry this message ended up being a bit longer than I planned!

How'd you get a place? In the ballot or charity? I applied through the ballot this year, but apparently the adds are massively stacked against you.

Sometimes you also get London Marathon places through clubs, our tri club has been given one spot this year. One of guys got in on the ballot last year, on his first try, and then went and ran 2:44. Git.
I have not been doing any training other than cycle commuting, but I have some fantastic excuses. Also it looks like this will not be the year I get to run Paris, so I may look at running the Liverpool Marathon in May. Got to figure out some goals for next season and plan training accordingly.

Faster probably, not sure longer is my thing. Also as off-road as possible I think, it was great fun splashing through the mud (luckily only ankle deep) and leaping over rocks.
In the short term I'd like to get down to a 25 minute 5k.
