    n00b question

    Hey,

Thinking about building a pc or the first time, I think I've got the right stuff but i'd like to check with you guys.

Here's the stuff currently in my basket:

    XFX 8800GTS XT 640MB DDR3, Dual DVI, PCI-E Graphics Card (87784)

    AMD AM2 Athlon 64 6400+ Black Edition Dual Core 3.2GHz, 2x 1MB Cache CPU - Retail w/o Heat Sink Fan (62090)

    OCZ 2GB Kit Reaper PC2 9200, 5-5-5-18 Memory Memory (19562)

    Asus R.O.G Crosshair AM2 NV590 SLi DDR2 USB2 SATAII 8Ch Audio Motherboard (4769)

    Samsung 500GB HD501LJ Spinpoint T, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Hard Disk Drive (4988)

Liteon 20X Lightscribe DVDRW Black + Software OEM (54058)

OCZ 700W with 120mm Fan GameXStream Power Supply (4495)

Creative Gigaworks ProGamer G500 Speaker (1099)

    Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Professional (38131)

Microsoft Windows XP Pro oem Inc Service Pack 2 (499)

Netgear WPN311GE Wireless Rangemax 108Mbps PCI Adaptor (2091)

Netgear PCI Gigabit LAN Network Card (951)

Recom Zenith Black Case with window (4710)

    Questions:

    1. AMD or Intel Processor?
    2. Have I got any useless junk in there?
    3. Which of those network thingys do I need?
    4. Is there any way of improving some items without getting too expensive.
    5. Did I miss anything out?

    Thanks,

    Matthew

(Edit: This is going to be used for gaming)

    Re: n00b question

I would go with a Core2 CPU YOYOtech

and an ASUS P5B motherboard YOYOtech (call YoYo first though a older Bios versions don't support quad core CPUs, just make sure )

As long as you don't want SLi the motherboard will be just what you need (who wants SLi anyway??) and what you save on the motherboard you can put into the CPU

8800GTS is a DX10 GPU for DX10 games you need Vista,

most if not all motherboards have built in LAN so no need for the Netgear PCI Gigabit LAN Network Card.

Don't forget keybaord and mouse also you will need SATA / IDE Cables also may need some 120mm fans for your case and if you can stretch to it get a decent fan controller.Best to get some cable ties to tidy up the wires for good airflow.

Is there a reason you picked that case? its ugly!! Its up to you but have a look at YOYOtech

not as bling but still a fantastic case for the price!

What about a monitor? Don't go over 22" though as you will then need a GTX to play with a decent frame rate.

    Re: n00b question

That motherboard doesn't appear to support Quad-core, would it be worth getting something like this.

Asus Striker Extreme (this one appears to have a fan controller in it)
    YOYO Code - 4965

    or

    Asus Commando
    YOYO Code : 34345

    Fan:

    Antec TriCool Fan/120mm
    YOYO Code : 80360

    (Sorry can't post URLs)

I'm probably going to stick with XP as Vista kind of sucks for gaming. I'll switch to Vista later. (Also rumours that DX10 may come to XP)
Also I already have a spare monitor. I may buy one next year though because it's not great.

Also, regarding the cables, I can't seem to find either of those? Am I looking in the wrong section?(Cables)

    Thanks,

    Matthew

I understand you were trying to place an order for the items online and we are out of stock on some of them. If you wish you can email me on deals@yoyotech.co.uk with any changes you want on the spec and I can see what I can do for you on the price and stock.

    Re: n00b question

Just wondering, Is its worth getting another graphics card and making use of SLI, or is SLI a load of rubbish?

    Thanks,

    Matthew

    Re: n00b question

Do I need to buy IDE/SATA cables? Or will they be supplied with my parts?

Someone mentioned them in a previous post.

Don't need to buy them. You get them with the motherboard.
