    W00t, got my E8400 today!

Popped into the shop and picked up my E8400, an Asus P5K-E/Wifi and 4GB of OCZ DDR2 Ram, £293 in total. Pretty sweet!

Just checked the mobo posts, will be installing it over the weekend!

Cheers to Mark @ Yoyo who helped me out in store today.

Nice to have a place to pop into near me with sensible prices wen you want something in a hurry. Excellent selection of GOOD products in store too.

Re: W00t, got my E8400 today!

I was wanting one aswell but there are big problems at the moment with these chips and the heat they are dishing out.
Its a common problem with these and is putting me right off.

Re: W00t, got my E8400 today!

heat they're putting out? what heat?

My P5K + E8400 + 8800GT box has the CPU running at 39 degrees C with the stock intel retail cooler (which is about half the height of the older LGA 775 intel retail coolers).

Been testing a few games and apps and everything I've tried can have it's settings maxxed out on the E8400 + 8800GT box, compared to my Opteron 175 + 8800GT.

I can now run TF2 at 1920x1200 / high + 4xAA where I had to run it at 1680x1050 / medium with no AA.

As I'm waiting on selling some things here I've go no cash left for a better cooler, once I get one I'll try some overclocking and see how it fares.

Re: W00t, got my E8400 today!

    hi guys.

I'm getting my temps from the BIOS and from the Asus P5K supplied Asus PC Probe II V1.04.19b software.

I picked up a Thermaltake Ultra 120 Extreme from Yoyo on Friday using a price match to scan's price (though their price match policy includes deliver, still it works out cheaper) and this is what I'm using to cool the E8400, only reason I got it was because I wanted a bit of silence. For a CPU fan i'musing a noctua 1200rpm 120mm fan on the above cooler and another one in the front of my new Ammo 533 case.

I've clocked mine up to 3.6ghz (with speedstep enabled) and it still idles at 38-39 degrees C. Not tried to go any higher as I don't want to O/C my ram (yet) and there's no divider that will let me over clock the cpu any more and run the memory under it's ratings. Occiasionally it reads 44c instead of 39c at idle, but only for like 1 second. So maybe there are monitoring issues, but all i know is the cooler I'm using is always COLD, and that's a good thing.

As far as overclocking goes all I've done is raised the fsb speed and changed the memory divider, no voltage increases or anything.

Had a good session playing TF2, CoD4, BF2142, CS:S and Flatout 2 here with my buddies all weekend and reported no problems.

Don't know what the full load temps were, sorry, but I'll check during the next long gaming session if I remember.

I'm very happy with it's price/performance ratio now, and like i've said before I'll get quad core next year when nahleem comes out IF there's anything that warrants me going dual core at that time AND if the price of DDR3 has come down. Right now ~£170 - £200 for an X48 + £250 for 4GB of ram doesn't make sense...

Re: W00t, got my E8400 today!

hi there, at present the 8400 cpu are very hard to come by....
there are major shortages on all of the new intel cpu's....
we have back order with all our suppliers - so as soon as they get soon in we will be sent them....

at present we have now time frame on when the stock will appear.....
so it just hoping and praying it will be soon rather the later....
