Smile Buying Advice - new rig

My current Mesh is giving me more and more trouble, so I may salvage what I can or just have it as a spare box.

So buying a new system - I need processing power (im a mapping analyst) and I play games a fair bit. No set budget, but dont mind splashing out a fair bit.

I was under the impression, self-build was loads cheaper than pre-built. However, I did a rough price adding up on dabs and it would appear a lot more expensive to buy all the components myself and build from scratch as opposed to buying from YoYoT. I guess this is cos they can buy in bulk? Or maybe my maths is wrong?

1. Whats the guaratee with YYT?

So still left with some choice problems. Hardware has always been another world to me.

This is what I do know:

2gb ram
No operating system
<150gb storage (i have a sata 750 spare)
DVD RW
8800 graphics
X-Fi Sound
No monitor/keyboard/mouse

So I still need to fill in a few blanks. Like more specifics on the above, links to pre-builds similar to the above, etc.

Id like to get a deal..... what do you recommend?

Any help would be grand.

Re: Buying Advice - new rig

It really depends on how much you think you can salvage from the old PC. If you can re-use for example, the case, PSU, RAM and HDD/DVD drives, building can be a lot cheaper.

Even if you are replacing almost all components it can still be a little cheaper - I think I calculated a saving of about £200 for my build.

The biggest advantage of buying a pre-built machine is the safety and guarantee, as you say.

You can see my components in the My System list on the left.

Buying Advice - new rig

hi there, thank you for considering us for your new pc.....

givern the information provided - i will try to answer some of your questions.....

Buying the parts to build a system can work out cheaper or sometimes more expensive then buying a pre-built system......
but by buying the parts and building the system you are getting want you want and not a load of stuff you don't.......
you are able to upgrade the system when you wish....

the YYT guaratee works as follows -
we warrenty all the parts in the machine - so all the parts are covered by a standard 1 year warrenty - however most of the parts will come with longer manufactor warrenties...
if we build a system then we also cover the system with a return to base warrenty.....
this means that -
if you brought parts from us and in six months something went wrong - it would be up to yoou to find the faulty part and send it back to us....
if we had built the system, then you can send the whole system to us and we would find the faulty part...

i will post a sysytem spec shortly - and you can have a look at it....

as for the pricing against dabs - it would depend on the parts/system you are looking at....as our prices are normally very competative

thanks

Buying Advice - new rig

hi there, if you are interested in a system based on the above specs then let me know and i can see what i can do for you.....

If you know the products you are looking for the just put each item into a shopping cart to get the price....
our configurator is design to give people an idea of a system - then let them change certain parts...

but if you know what parts you need, email me at orders@yoyotech.co.uk and i can check them and give you a price....

also both the e8400 and e8500 cpus are instock at the moment....

hope this helps

Just a few points on the above spec.

1. BFG 8800GT - For £180 you may aswell spend the extra £20 and go for the 8800GTS G92 512mb. Its a superior card for very little more. This one: YOYOtech is the quickest clock for clock around and i can say from first hand experience its a real rocket.

2. The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro - They are OK but have a real cheap 'n' nasty feel to them and although the performance is just about OK, they arent anything special.
This cooler: YOYOtech has VERY good performance at a great price and will let you overclock if you need to. Its also extremely quiet. At this price, there isnt a better air cooler.

3. Abit IP35 PRO Intel P35 - Good Motherboard but i certainly wouldnt pay £100+ for it. The normal IP-35 or the Dark Raider edition would be more than enough and £30+ cheaper.

4. Corsair 520W HX Series Modular Powersupply - Personal prefeerence i know, but as good as this PSU is, im not a fan. Its powerful but the modular connections arent very robust and the RMA service (once out of the retailers warranty) is in the USA and has to be sent at your own expense. Not good for you really then if you get to 13 months and it dies. It just has to go in the bin.
If you think its worth that small risk then go for it.

5. Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 - Good memory but has a few compatibility issues with some motherboards.
I would rather put a couple of modules of this: YOYOtech or the Crucial equivalent in.

Hope that helps a little.

Not from Yoyotech unfortunately. Not at that kind of price anyway.
I dont think it would be right to link an alternative from elsewhere in their forums. Sorry

(Just avoid anything Ezecool aswell...they are shocking at best)

With a rig like that then go for 64Bit Vista.
Its a waste not too and the driver issues, especially with all your new parts, are a thing of the past.

Re: Buying Advice - new rig

That 620W PSU is a bit of overkill.
The 520W would be fine for that......its not bad...just not my choice.

Mark,

Thanks to you and Blitzen for advice. If I did go Vista 64 and got another 2gb ram would the Corsair 520hx do the job for me. This would save me a few quid on which to consider the gts 512 once it comes in stock.(Any Ideas?)
Sorry for all questions. After that I will send in final spec to clear with you then order

Thanks
