Uninstall Kaspersky. Install Microsoft Security Essentials.
Task Manager will no doubt show two instances of avp.exe and one will be eating your CPU.
Pause protection for one minute and see if it stops. If it does, uninstall KIS fully, reboot and reinstall using the latest version from their site.

Check to make sure you are not using 2 antiviruses etc. The amount of people I have seen that have installed google pack (with all downloads) and also added another antivirus and ended up with a dog for a pc.
I wasn't going to bother replying to that. However, I shall provide this link. The ArsTechnica forums are mostly populated by the kind of people who work in all levels and areas of IT and generally provide a good selection of different opinions based on their own experiences. Their preference for AV applications, however, is quite different:

One thing I'd also check is to see if it's setup to run daily full scan of your pc, that's been the only real major issue I've had with AVG in the past.
Sudden slow downs caused by it running an automated full active scan of all my hard drives.
Alot of people are down on MSE because early versions didn't do much in the way of protection and would damage any non-legitimate installs of any MS software.
not that I'm saying any of us are using non-legitimate, just that it rubbish at what we wanted it to do and good at doing what ms wanted it to do, which moves it out of the territory of usefull software and into spyware territory. (ie not directly harmful but using system resources for no benefit to the user and stealing bandwidth to report on the user, even if there was no problem to report.)
I will stress this was a couple of years back and the situation may of changed as I've not looked into it for a while.
I'm still using my standard combo, avg (free version)+ spybot + malewarebytes (free version)
AVG has got more bloated (in terms of number of exe's and threads) however it's still fairly memory light (currently using approx 10mb of memory in total over 8 exe's)
