Question IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

I bought an IP35 Pro and E8400. Partly because it's a good board with plenty i/o, but also because of the advanced thermal/fan controls which I wanted to make use of to quieten my system.

So when will there be a final, stable BIOS that actually supports the 45nm chips? The CPUs have been in retail for a while now and yet I've still no idea of temperatures or voltages in my system. I'm not prepared to use a beta BIOS (i.e. 16B09) as I rely on my pc for several things - it's not purely a leisure machine designed for tinkering with.

I'd really like to know when I'll get the functionality I was expecting from this board. Thank you.

Re: IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

There should be a proper bios already.

I have an older board AW9D-MAX and the proper bios release for that was 2 weeks ago.

Yup, there should be, but isn't. Last BIOS release for IP35 Pro is on their website as BIOS 14 (which is what my board shipped with) which was released on 6th September 2007.

I'm currently awaiting the exact same parts. Is this definitely something that's fixable by BIOS updates then, and not just an issue with the chip as people were initially stating?

I'm planning to try and hit 4Ghz so it would be nice to know.

Re: IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

The BIOS update won't affect your readings in CoreTemp, but the IP35 Pro on BIOS 14 currently can't read the "normal" cpu temp sensor (not the cores). Mine currently reads either 6°C or 127°C and the voltage reporting is all off too, rendering any thermal/fan/oc'ing controls useless. A beta bios is out which corrects some of these problems, but I think it's fair to say there should be an official, tested BIOS by now...

Ohh, that I didn't realise... well it looks like the inbuilt temp probes on my NZXT Lexa will be put to good use at least. Seems that the 16 BIOS is at beta 9 now... hopefully won't be much longer til the final.

Re: IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

Strange how a 975x chipset bios would be updated to take Wolfdale before a P35 chipset is.

    (Even though im glad)

Re: IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

from what I've read though some Wolfies report temps just fine in IP35 series mobos ... & some don't (some guys have literally pulled 1 CPU out & replaced it with a supposedly identical one & had totally different temps).
This is also true of other mobo mfrs' products which (along with a report supposedly from Lenovo) is why there is a supposition that Intel has a sensor problem on some Wolfies.

Interesting - I hadn't read any of these reports. If there are Wolfdales that report temperatures properly in IP35 Pros with BIOS 14 then that puts more fuel on the fire that is these possibly dodgy temp sensors.

The temperature problem, imho, is unlikely to be a mobo Bios problem anyway.

It looks like its more a sensor issue within the core so any manner of bios board updates wont make a difference.

Re: IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

Yes, the DTS diodes aren't read by the motherboard, but I was under the impression that the Tcase sensor (located between the cores and the heat spreader, iirc?) is dependant on a supporting BIOS.

I'd love to know from Abit whether BIOS 14 does or does not fully support the Wolfdales yet.

Re: IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

Bios 1.2 adds official support for Wolfdale and Yorkies

BIOS release V12 for IP35 Pro

    Release information:

    [ENGLISH]

    1. Update CPU micro code.
    2. Support Wolfdale & Yolkfield CPU.
    3. Support the pin definition of Front Audio adjusting function.
    4. BIOS compiled date: 08/15/2007.

    ftp://ftp.abitshop.com/pub/bios/ip35pro/

    However is it cpu specific?

Temps a few people reported issues here on Hexus on the first batch from Scan. Thread sorta died so no firm conclusion drawn but looks like early 8400 did have a DT issue.

Re: IP35 Pro - Wolfdale bios?

Yep, I've seen that on their site. But it doesn't account for all the reports of dodgy Wolfdale temp readings on the IP35 Pro that I've read about.

One of the following scenarios must be true:

    1. The IP35 Pro with BIOS 14 cannot interpret Wolfdale temps and voltages correctly and requires an update.
    2. The IP35 Pro with BIOS 14 is fine but my E8400 is so faulty that the temp and voltage readings are unuseable.

Abit really need to clarify this, imo, as I'm not getting the functionality from the board that I bought it for, and I'm beginning to get tired of waiting, being in limbo not knowing where the fault lies in my system.

    Its not specific to Abit.
Google 8400 temps you will find people are having problems with P5K etc.

It is more of a chipset issue rather than board/company specific by the looks of it.
