So if I update the tags in the library then format my hdd, isntall iTunes fresh it and reload the tunes into the library it will still have the tags? I ask as ive just renamed a tune in the library and its still called the old name in my mp3 folder
Try using Ephpod instead of iTunes.
Cheers, it seems the library does update the tags on the original tunes on my hdd as I deleted all the data files in my music and it kept the setting.
Fianly got it to transfer tunes onto the ipod.
Also a weird thing, Windows media player has been adding tracks to the ipod as I listen to them, auto syncing without me telling it to, odd thing is it just copys em to the music folder on the ipod and the ipod cant seem to read from there lol
Caged Thank you! ephpod is well laid out, tunes go from hdd to iPod, no library nonsense, before transfer it asks me to update the ID tag which updates the MP3 on my HDD as well.
Its iPod software as it should be, Why oh why Apple isnt your software this functional.
Players like the iRiver H320 or the Rio Carbon don't need you to use tags. You can simply browse the folders. One of those might have been better for you. They also support drag and drop, so you can just move music onto the player via Windows Explorer. You don't need any other software. You can also use tags on them aswell, but you don't have to use tags like the iPod. For some people (like me) I just prefer using directories and folders than tags. However playlists and random play work much better on the iPod.
Tags are really only useful if you use playlists a lot. I don't, I prefer to listen to an album and a specific artist/band rather than a bunch of singles.
One thing I don't like about iTunes is how it tags. You can have a triple CD album and it will tag each CD as a different genre or even name. I find I don't have this problem with other rippers/taggers. As compilations it goes crazy. I don't want a Beatles compilation in a folder called comilations. I want it in the Beatles folder. I also don't the tracks tagged as 30 different genres etc.
For ripping I use Audiograbber than Lame to encode. Works better then iTunes in my experience.
ephpod is meant to be excellent. never used it myself.
iPods are the sweetest thing ever You can get AppleCare for it too, just get one you'll love it.
"However playlists and random play work much better on the iPod."
err what planet are you from?? ramdom play is random play, it could not be better or worse!!!
Please don't get an ipod, don't be a sheep, don't be wooed by scary shaven mac fanatics, ipods are ok, but not for the price.
