Re: Which car are you MOST likely to see rammed up your exhaust pipe on a Motorway?

Man us Audi drivers are well liked (I've had 2 A4 TDis in the past).

Must say when I was doing that run I would sit the A4 on cruise at about 80 and then back it down with good distance to the car in front, no point in going right up their chuff just makes you more likley to stuff into the back of them.

I always used to find it was the 320/325 that would blast up behind me at about 120, just start to slow as he pushed the headlights out of the sockets then sit there (often with HIDs or other super bright lights on) about 3 inch off my back bumper. I used to just gradually bring the speed down to 60, then 50, then 40 and just watch them explode before dropping it a peg, leaving a nice black diesel cloud and shooting off bond style

RavenNight: Yes, you're not the Police. If someone wants to speed it's not your job to stop them by blocking the lane. Doing so is more likely to cause an accident as they're likely to do some stupid manoeuvre to get past you (bumper chasing, undertaking, etc.)

Also the highway code says you should, which is good enough for me!

Well obviously, but if there's a decent amount of traffic in all the lanes, why risk changing when there isn't any need?

Re: Which car are you MOST likely to see rammed up your exhaust pipe on a Motorway?

Risk chaning lanes? You make it sound like a life threatening manoeuvre lol

    I judge it like this,

If I pass a car and i'm not going to pass another for the next 20-30 seconds I pull in to the inner most lane I can.

If someone has caught me up and is obviously wanting to go faster I will pull in if i'm not going to catch the next car to pass for around 10 - 15 seconds.

If you think i'm pulling in for that 5 seconds gap you can undertake me for all I care and I hope the pigs are about when you do

That's because it is. Apart from all the illegal stuff you see on the roads like tailgating, speeding etc the most dangerous manoevre you can carry out on a motorway is a change of lane. Quite commonly known - have a look on some of the road safety sites.

Surely it's only the most dangerous manoevre you can do on the motorway because, it is the only manoevre you can do on the motorway short of joining and exiting the motorway you don't do anything else (apart from the illegal stuff which is more dangerous as you say).

I don't honestly see the danger of changing lanes as long as you do it the way you are trained as learners.

That in itself is the danger - The likely consequence of a mistake when changing lane on a motorway is much higher due to the speeds involved.

I do a lot of motorway miles these days (~70 a day) and I think the standard of driving is quite frankly shocking.
Other than the expected white and now silver van crew it does tend to be the VW, Audi and BMW TDi crew, its rarely the R32/Mx/RSx crew possibly as there is not as many of them on the road.
Funnily enough im noticing a large amount of women racers out there in their 330 GTi R-type STi cruisers, really giving it some ... Anyone else noticed this or is it just my jealousy showing through.

Re: Which car are you MOST likely to see rammed up your exhaust pipe on a Motorway?

You're trained at 70mph, you go faster it's up to you to understand how the car reacts.

If you're affraid to change lanes..or you feel it's dangerous.. follow the lorries

Getting in a car is dangerous. Everything about driving is dangerous. I dont see changing lanes as any more dangerous than any typical day to day driving when you do it at the the approriate speed for the conditions.
