    Where can I find....

    Detailed car information?
    I want to make a nice little excel sheet in which I can work out approx how much a journey will cost me in time and petrol, so I need to know fuel tank capacity and gallons per mile at certain speeds.

    NB I drive a 97 1.6 Golf.

    Anyone know I'm having no luck with Mr Google!

    Re: Where can I find....

    [shameless plug] VWAudi Forum [/shameless plug] I have the same username over there as I do here.

    The tank capacity on a 1.6 petrol MkIII Golf is 55 litres if it helps.

    MPG looks to be around 40 combined but I can't be 100% sure.

    Pop over to the above site and ask the same question, remember who referred you too

    EDIT: 1997 is a crossover year - so it's either a late model MkIII or an early MkIV. If it's a MkIV my figures above are all wrong

    Re: Where can I find....

    one thing I would bear in mind, is not to use the paper figures for MPG.... you should have a good idea of what your car gets in the 'real' world... use those figures

    My Car's a VW, any idea where I can find a graph which shows speed linked to MPG?
    That's the final piece I need in my puzzle

    hmmm, i dont know of any graphs, but as a rough guide

    0mph = 50mpg
    100 mph = 15 mpg

    LOL

    seriously though, erm.... i'm not actually sure such a graph would exist?

    Re: Where can I find....

    I thought you could get data graphs showing mpg at different speeds?

    Ie

    30mph = 30 mpg
    40 = 35mpg

    etc

    I may be wrong!

    Tough challenge. Do you have an onboard computer?

    Re: Where can I find....

    Here are my workings - bearing in mind I know it's an under estimate!

    239 Miles to Newquay

    55 Litres capacity
    12.09830365 Gallons capacity
    34 Miles per Gallon

    411.3423242 Miles per tank

    £1.07 Per litre of petrol average cost

    £58.80 Cost of filling a tank

    7.029411765 Gallons to get to Newquay
    31.95635174 Litres to get to Newquay

    £34.16 Cost to get to Newquay

    Re: Where can I find....

    It's infinitely variable, so there's not much point in working it out. You could be doing 30mph in 5th gear and you'd be getting many more miles per gallon than if you were doing 50mph in 3rd gear.

    Edit: 34MPG from a 1.6 on the motorway is poor

    agreed....

    I saw more than that on my brothers golf around town and I've got a heavy foot....

    i'd aim for around 40/45mpg out of the 1.6, sticking at around 65mph, you should see that....

    Re: Where can I find....

    Condition of a car makes a huge difference to economy, as does the way you drive it... speed doesnt really matter. 56 is supposed to be the most efficient in theory assuming a straight long road.

    And throttle opening makes far more differnce than gear... so driving in 3rd or 2nd doesnt really have much negative effect.. as you need less throttle to accelerate and almost none to maintain speed.

    my mpg spreadsheet (openoffice)

    As you can see, for my 5mile commute I am usually late and so I may hit 90 once or twice on the way

    On motorway you should be aiming for 45+ mpg in a 1.6. 50+ if its relatively new. I would guess my 2.3 would make a good 35+ if I gave it a chance...
