Something for the weekend....

Hi All,
I'm driving up to Birmingham (from London) for my stag weekend in a couple of weeks, and I fancy a bit of an upgrade from the Passat. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Boxster S?
M3 convertable?
SLK?

Anyone had any experience of renting any of these?

Boxster is a good choice - as long as there are only two of you and you aren't doing a large amount of motorway driving. If you can plot a route using a and b roads to where you are going, it is likely the best choice.

The M3 is meant to be a brilliant car - I think Saracen is rather fond of his, but I doubt it would give you the sense of occasion you are after.

SLK, I'll leave that suggestion there.

How about a 911? Fun, not too much more to hire than the Boxster I would have thought, and a little bit more interesting. Not quite as easy to get on with as the Boxster though.

SLK is a good car (the new one is supposed to be great to drive) only thing is that it is not as focused as a Boxter or M3.

Personally I wouldn't be seen dead in any of them, M3 is well an M3, and the other two are hairdressers cars.

Or as Dave says, 911, can't beat a 911 looks or drive wise.

Depends if you mean the old or the new shape.

The new shape isn't bad, but again won't offer the same sense of occasion that the Boxster or 911 will - its a normal Merc inside. That was perhaps my same criticism as the M3 on this occasion - its a 3 series. Its a fantastic 3 series, but a 3 series none the less. I'm guessing you wanted something a bit special for the stag weekend?

The new one is meant to handle better than the older one, and be a bit more poky to boot, but for me at least, just doesn't do it.

As I said, the Boxster S (which are quite reasonable to hire for a weekend) or the slightly more expensive 911 Carrera, would be my choice.

EDIT - a quick google kicks out this - might be worth looking at for suggestions. Oh, and if you've got a spare 22k, the Enzo can be yours for a weekend

It depends how you want you drive to go TBH

Clarkson-esque POWAH!! and Flakes AMG55 would be a safe bet.

Have your cake and eat it - Boxster S if its sunny, Cayman if not.

Full on thrills though (and a helmet) then an Atom might do yah

Out of the 3 I would take the porka or get an M3 hard top.

How about an Audi R8 or TT Quattro? Go for something zany like a Chevy Tahoe equipped with 4x15 inch subs (a la Steve Mead style)!

Maybe you can go hire the Blitz ER34 Skyline?

It really depends on what you want to do with the car really. Pose? Enjoy the ride? Be a "chick magnet"?

I'd personally pick a car I would love to drive but hate to own (and live with day by day). Perhaps a Porsche GT3 RS (thinking more along the lines of the 9FF GT9) or something similar, stripped out, uncomfortable but one helluva drive!

R8 is approx £1500 for the weekend so that's out.

It's my stag do, I reckon the Mrs might be a bit upset if I labelled myself a "Chick magnet"...

I just want something fun to drive for the weekend, between events on the Saturday, and up and down the motorway.

Did you actually check if it's possible to rent any of those cars before posting?

b0redom, if that is what you are going to use it for, look for an M3.

If you are going to give it a good drive down country lanes, take the Boxster.

From this place, it's cheaper than the R8, although you'll need a big deposit, and a lot of wonga for the number of miles you want to do

Stemming from Zak's suggestion, if you want something that is going to transport you in comfort, for longer journeys and be something a little bit special, how about an S Class?

Not a huge amount more than the Boxster/911 to hire, even for a long weekend for both the S500 and the S320CDi, and will waft you to your destination in comfort and luxury?
