Insuring a silly car with 0 NCB and experience

I have a friend who is learning to drive. I keep winding him up to get him a bit more focused on this, but it doesn't seem to be working much. Anyway... One day I saw him on msn and asked if he got himself a car yet. He said: "Yeah, Mercedes, 320, clk". I said: "ha ha, very funny".

Well a few days back we went to watch batman, and he got his phone out and showed me the pics... It actually is true. The only clarification is that his parents got him the car. Without asking him first. Which while nice in theory doesn't seem to work too well in practice. He was rather hoping for an old fiesta or micra. So he now has a car thats fast, thirsty and as far as I can see at the moment uninsurable (well I only tried one mock quote on direct line). It's also an automatic - which as a first car is not ideal if you ever want to drive manuals in the future.

By the way it is a 99 model so it's not hideously expensive by itself, but 1999 is the year when they updated the range which brought them from insurance group 16 to 18. Not sure which one his is.

So does anyone know an insurer that may not refuse a new driver with 0 ncb on a car like this?

Poor lad may have to sell it in the end lol!

P.S. He is 25 - so there is a little hope yet.

i don't think you can have above a certain insurance group until your 21 or something... (not by law or anything, it's just incredibly hard and expensive...)

if he can it will cost a bomb...

Someone will be willing to offer insurance for it, but it will cost a bomb and his parents will most likely have to cough up the cash for it. It will also take ages to find a quote, what one insurance company won't insure another one will for a heavy premium.

He will be able to get insured through a few select specialist companies, but no doubt the cost of the insurance would be more than a micra + insurance

That is unless he is doing something dodgy with insurance, like being names on his mums insurance.

I know of a 19 year old that has some limited edition Impreza Turbo, he also has a knackered old 305. He is fully comp on the 305 which lets him drive the Scooby third party. I didn't think anyone gave you the "any car third party" feature until you were 25, but apparenly he has asked his insurance company about this and they said yes.

I thought that sort of thing only applied if someone else was fully comp on the other vehicle, otherwise families with more than one car would just insure one?

Yep the car you drive 3rd party needs to be fully comp on someone else afaik.

Also insurance companies were cracking down on people doing this a few years back, insuring fiestas to drive porsches etc..

I forgot this part of the argument we were having with him. This is what we were saying, but he reckoned otherwise.

Personally I hope he puts it in a ditch (without hurting himself too badly). Might make him wise up. But then again, he is a Shetlander.

Try the likes of Adrian Flux, they were pretty good on my quote, though that was me at 20 with 3 years NCB. 25 with none shouldn't be too bad?

Re: Insuring a silly car with 0 NCB and experience

When I was 27 (29 now) I got my first policy when changing from a 130bhp 2.0 Focus to a 209bhp 2.2 Honda Accord Type-R. I was caught in the loop of saving money by being on my parent's policy (but my car) but not getting my own because of ridiculous prices and zero NCB.

In the end, I had to break the cycle and the best price, by a mile, was from Admiral, plus they had a bonus accelerator offer that gives you a year's NCB after just 10 months. Hey, it all helps.
