"...Inlet and Exhaust valve springs in cylinder head which MIGHT break..."

Phew, looks like the side valve powered cars are ok then

/me hides from an angry Zak.

I am fairly certain that the Frontera isn't a GM product apart from the badge, something is telling me it's an Isuzu.

Well it has the badge until you go over the first bump, chances it will fall off

They arn't that bad, the Merc M class on the other hand, now there is a lousy off roader...

Anyhow, best leave this thread to the world of Vaux valve springs.

ok, why do valves have springs? might seem like a silly question, but couldnt you just hard- stick the buggers onto the end of the conrods so they just bounce up and down with them, running off the cam, so that no springs are needed?

Right, tiredness and whisky are hurting my typing bigtime, so bear with me.

You can't have valves driven off the con rods, the conrods are what connects the pistons and crank, and have nowt to do with the valve train directly.

I presume you are thinking of pushrods, which are what drive the valves in an non overhead cam engine.

What you are asking for is for the cam to be able to close a valve as well as open it.

For this to happen the cam followers must be able to follow the lobe of the cam without anything pushing said follower onto the lobe. Hard to think of how this could be achived, I guess you could have a 'track' around the lobe and the follower wired to follow this track.

That would be a lot harder than the relativly simple sistem we have now, of the valve being closed by it's spring, and the cam lobe working against said spring.

Anyhow, I am sure somebody who is sober can explain this far better than I have tried to.

Oh, there is another way of driving valves, electricaly. Push pull solinoids, driven of the ECU. Far from being production, but in effect the ecu decides how much lift/duration the valves need, and can alter it on the fly. Or in other words you can go from a wild overlappy high lift cam to a mild fuel sipper without stripping the engine down. Just with more range than vtec and the like.

The Desmodronic valve system that Ductai uses does not involve springs. instead there's two sets of cams. One is used to open the valve, the other to close it. if you look at a Ducati tach - there isn't a redline usually. although there is a rev limiter - most vehicles redlines are set at the level where the engine (and cams) are spinning so fast that the spring cannot bounce the valve back in time for the next strike of the cam - hence people talk about uprating valve springs and lighter valves (bounce quicker, therefore upping the redline a bit). The Desmo system means that the engine is limited only by how fast it can throw the pistons around inside the engine..

i thought a redline was to stop ya damaging the engine too much, i mean if the valves cant keep up you just loose a sh*tload of power dont you?
