    Quick driver rant....

    /RANT ON

I'm all for people not being afraid of snow. I drive in it every chance I get, as it's the easiest way to improve your control skills in icy conditions, but FFS....

If you are coming to a junction, and even if you have right of way, be prepared to stop because the other driver may be completely clueless, slam hit anchors on, and skid into the junction!

I'm driving home snow everywhere, blind corner with a car parked on it, so I have to go into the oncoming lane (empty) to get round. I commit to the maneuver, and carefully start going round the bend, when I see a car coming towards me. I stop (without skidding) and put the car into reverse to give the other geezer plenty of room on the road to get past... The frikkin idiot doesn't even bother slowing down, must be doing at least 30...

    GRRRRRR!!!!!!

Fortunately I was able to get out the way, but FFS, if I had my "I'm a chav-get-out-of-my-way-the-roads-belong-to-me-even-though-I-claim-everything-through-benefits" driving hat on god knows what would have happened.

    /RANT OFF

    Feel better now

    Tyres, thats a key point.
How many people do you know that drive all year on "Summer" tyres...

In some parts its illegal not to have the correct tyres on for snow..

I'd swap gladly to winter tyres - if the retailers hadn't *DOUBLED* their prices for them.

    +1

I'd rather be safe and immobile than gouged on £600+ for new tyres I can only use for a few months

Thing that has annoyed me most is the lack of common sense, my car is now blocked in at work because some bint in a Clio has decided she doesn't want to get snow on her pretty shoes so has parked in FRONT of a bay, despite there being at least another car length behind her.

With all the legislation that the last government introduced, I wished they'd introduced a "common sense law". It shouldn't be right for dumb people to consistently act like idiots... for that's a totally different rant.

On the subject or tyres, I've a friend who swears by snow socks for a temporary aid to snow driving blues. Never tried them myself.

They are dangerous over 40mph though and you have to use them on snow only, they get shredded on cleared patches of roads

    Re: Quick driver rant....

Got 2 shovels and a few other people blocked in because of her so could get the shovels under her back tyres and just push her into a spot... either that or go tell reception again, she (assume it's a woman as no man could park THAT badly) didn't move it yesterday when asked via group email and has parked in the same spot today like a prize idiot, she is pretty much blocking 4 parking spaces as a result *facepalm*

/em raises eyebrows at quoting himself, but my earlier comment just seems so appropriate!

reception announcement: idiot with the clio shift it, or a brick goes through the side window to let your handbrake off so we can move it.

should do the trick... legally you may even be allowed to via right to self-help (not sure though) - you've tried to contact them...

At least you guys can go out in the snow. I don't dare go out on my bicycle.

Ha... If only I could. I love riding when it's "Challenging" only I can't for 2 reasons - firstly I've got a snapped finger, and secondly, my bike's not where I am

I fitted some studded tires to my bike, and I have been going out as normal.

The things are fantastic, you can ride on sheet ice, or that relay compacted snow that is almost as slippery, and the tires grip like you are riding on a dry dirt path. The tires will skid if you hit the brakes really hard, but it is a controllable skid, like skidding on a dry path. Riding around today, I have more confidence on the bike than I do on foot.

As Moby-Dick complained, prices for winter tires have gone up recently, if you can even get them. Personally I brought my winter bike tires back in August, and they only cost me £30 each back then. My one regret is not buying another pair of studded tires for my mountain bike at the same time.
