    Problems with my Peugeot 306 any ideas??

    I bought a Peugeot 306 XR 1.4 L reg 3 weeks ago and when i first got it seemed to be a great little car but a week later it has started to Bunny hop at low speeds and the rev counter is moving between 10-20,000 revs with out me touching the gas and the car keeps spluttering when this happens.

    When i get going onto the motorway at about 70 or above it runs great but as soon as i get down to less than 30 mphs and especially at roundabouts or in traffic jams it starts to bunny hop again.

    I've checked the oil and all the leads are on properly i even had the garage i got it from have a look and they checked it over and cant workout why it is doing this.

    And to make matters worse i smashed the front right Headlamp when i let the bonnet go down with gravity ( iwas a little annoyed at the time) and not by lowering slowly like i should have so i also need a good scrap yard near where i live if anyway knows of any i'd much appreciate it

    P.S. i live it the west thurrock area near grays, purfleet & Aveley..

    Sounds like a fuel/air mixture problem to me, although I will let someone else with a little more knowledge than me answer too.

    Mentioned on another forum for a BMW but could be similar...

    "Check the hosing for any small cracks. I found the hose going from Inlet manifold to AFM had a crack underneath"

    also...

    "You could maybe try a good Fuel Injector cleaner and run it through to clear off some of the crap built up in the system?"

    When the car struggles to idle, can you smell petrol at all?

    Both me and my dad had similar problems.

    In my case it was a lambda zond and a stepper mottor that needed replacing. (250 quid with labour i think).
    In my fathers case it was an air valve or summing - i think that was 150 quid (or might've been 250 again, i forget).

    To find out properly they'd need to read in the error code. Which is about 30 quid on its own.

    Yeah thats what i think it might be, i get the feeling it's struggling to get enough air.

    Good idea i'll do that tomorrow, is there any tape or bandage you can use to block the holes or would it need a new hose

    Hmm Fuel injector cleaner, not heard of that i'll give that a try as well.

    I dont smell any petrol when the engine is idling no, thanks for your advice

    I did a search on google and i did get stepper motor come up, i hope it dont cost much, as i just just paid out for the car £1000 so fingers crossed it's not that bad

    It sounds to me like you have an air leak somewhere in the fuelling system.

    Don't suppose you know if it's single or multi point injection?

    I'm guessing single, in which case, pull the top of the throttle body and get some good old fashioned carb cleaner sprayed about. You tend to get a lot of crap building up on the butterfly.

    Injection cleaner would help (as it's mixed in with the fuel, then passed over the butterfly) but ye old carb cleaner quicker!

    I know I'm out-gunned here in terms of knowledge but if it helps any my 306 (M reg, 1.4 XL) is a simple carb lump - all mechanical - no ECU / injectors messing with the fuel / air mixture (well AFAIK anyway!). Assuming yours is the same it ought to be something that can be found and fixed fairly easily. Try and find a local independant specialist instead of the place that sold it to you.

    Oh and things to worry about :

    Driveshafts. I've been told Peugeot fitted (relatively) weak ones to the 1.4 engined cars. No idea if this is true but something to keep in mind.

    Head gasket. I had a simple top hose (first connection from the radiator) split from the inside... Lost all water in a few miles one day and muppet from recovery company said it was a sensor fault... Drove further with it (even though the temp gauge was at max and the STOP light was on) which warped the head and left me with a nasty repair bill to pay. The top hose was *proabably* simply due to age but it's something worth checking when you get the car sorted. On that score check it's had it's cam belt changed. If the schedule is the same as mine it should have been done at 72,000 miles.

    Could be, hard to tell though, im getting the car diagnostic checked tomorrow so i'll let you all know what comes up

    I thought you said is was a lambda zond?? or is that what you used to have or was the Peugeot the vehicle that had the stepper motor problem.

    I cant find many details on the Peugeot 306 1.4 XR L reg so im not sure.. so the throttle isnt too hard to get to then, i'll strip it down (Gulp!) and see if i can clean it up (If it needs cleaning that is) Is fuel injection cleaner for cars that have injection as i dont think my car is a 1.4i just 1.4??

    I would have thought it would be nearly the same as your M reg 1.4 XL as it the same car just a year older, it will be quite a relief if it's only something small, i just wish i didnt smash the headlamp glass as it is quite hard to get a hold of a second hand one and a set seem to be a minimum of £55 to buy!.

    What worrys me is it seems to have had a new gasket fitted, and a strange thing happened today when i parked it up the radiator fan was still running for about 3 minutes after i turned off the ignition.

    I cant check the history as i didnt get any with it (Im Ssoo dumb!), and the brakes are now squeking even though the garage owner said it had new front brakes just fitted and a brand new MOT that day.

    I think im a fool to be honest even though i did check it over quite well and had two friend, my brothers girlfriend and my mothers husband take a look at it before i bought it.

    The car looks so beautiful and (was) great to drive, im just an idiot for being so gullible to believe what the garage bloke said oh well..

    Just an update on my car as it is..
    Was let down by the Mobile diagnostic 'Auto tune' he said he would turn up after 12 on sunday, he didnt so i rang him up and he said he was a bit behind would give me a call when he could make it that day, at 5.20 p.m. he rang and said he could'nt make it as two of his jobs were running behind.

    So i said forget about it, and what i did was take Jiff Lemons advice and tried to get some carboretter cleaner, two shops had ran out of it so i went to a Garage near where my mum lives and they said try fuel injection cleaner which will clean carboretters too. (as adviced by Raz316)

    So i tried that and the car has stopped bunny hopping but when i start the car from cold it cuts out, if i press the accelerater down a little when i turn the ignition the car starts and when its warm the car runs great until i have to slow down and then it judders a little.

    A couple of people at my work place have taken a look at the car and said it sound like the tuning is out on the engine, so the next step i think is to get some new parts for the car and some new oil i.e. air & oil filter, i might take the pipes off and use WD40 to clean all the gunk out of them, get some carberetter cleaner and clean that out then get the car tuned, probably get some new leads and spark plugs too.

    I also have a new Glass for the headlamp on order, but now for some reason my headlamp light has stopped working perhaps some water has got in there i have had it taped up to stop that happening but might be to late.

    Found out the main reason why the glass broke, there are rubbers under the left and right side of the bonnet and the left one was twice the height of the right one so when the bonnet dropped it had nothing to stop it hitting the headlamp at full speed oh well just my luck, have fixed that now though
