Death of a Cinq (56k warning)

People may remember from when Howard got his car...

Well, on Monday she was waiting to turn right at a set of lights at a cross roads round the corner from home when she was hit from behind by a van and shunted across the junction into oncoming traffic and hit head-on by a micra...

    99.999% sure it's a write off.
Overall the car stood up well to the impact and crumpled in all the right places, although the drivers seat did not do so well and she has quite bad whiplash. But she will be OK and it could have been a LOT worse, her daily journey is 10 mins on A Roads and 20 mins on Motorways.

So need to start looking for a new car pretty soon, it will be used for daily commute of approx 25 miles each way, 20 miles motorway, 5 miles A Roads. Budget is around £3-4k

She is fussy and says she wants a Punto - so the choice would be between a 1.9 JTD or a 1.2 16v Sporting, but also interested what other suggestions anyone may have.

could have been a lot nastier.. at least her insurance should be fine.

for that money a punto is a good bet, although the 16v will probably be a lot more thirsty than the chinq. what about a seat arosa? small, cute, and very economical in case of the diesel.. should be cheap too

You can be 100% sure. There's no way on earth that's worth fixing. Glad to hear she'll be alright though, what a mess. As for a car, if it must be a Punto, it's got to be the JTD IMO. It'll use a fair bit less fuel which will really add up if she's doing 250 miles a week. It'll be more relaxing to drive on the motorway too.

Glad she's ok; I always find myself saying it, but cars can be fixed or replaced, people can't.

To say the car's had a head on shunt as well, I think it's stood up pretty damn well !

Either the diesel or the 1.2 would be fine; I'd be checking the insurance group for both as that could be an issue after a crash (even though it's not her fault)

    *ahem* micra

Rescue recovery man said that they're the best cars for crashes (I didn't crash, my sister did, in her saxo, which just crumbles), cheap insurance and really good for commuting (dad has commuted the 2.5 hour commute round the m25 in mine - waiting for his new car, that he promptly drove into a deer ops
I've also done 10 mile commute on country lanes / A roads and a once weekly 1.5 hour trip to blackpool.
