his will be a PD which mine isn't - don't know if there are PD-specific issues that might be a factor, but the MAF is where i'd start... i'm guessing his economy might be down too...

I'd agree with you - fault codes would be useful tho - how about going on a VW forum and finding a friendly chap with VAG COM willing to help out?

Would it have to be a VW dealer / garage? I have a friend at a garage who has a machine, but he deals with all cars, so should I see a VW specialist?

If you were round my way I've a mate with a garage with a machine that can read all manu's codes off No, it doesn't need to be a VW dealer but a specialist is more likely to know what the codes mean and give advice. You don't even need a garage - as I said, VAG COM (a product for PCs) can link to any VAG vehicle with a special cable and quite a few enthusiasts have it.
    Try VWVortex forums etc.

I've seen VAG-COM cables on ebay for around £10 - and can download the shareware version - do you think it'd be worth trying this?

i don't have any experience with VAGCom, i think it just pumps out codes for which you'll need the translations ..

BMW inline (straight) 6 turbo diesels rev to about 5.5k

No point tho - as has been said above, the turbo drops off at about 4-4.5k. And in the BM at least, by the time you got there then you were into points territory most of the time - 143bhp (this is an engine designed in 92-93 and still runs in various states of tune in Discoverys and the TD5 Land Rover defender afaik)

I've replaced the air filter this weekend, the old one was full of tiny dead bugs and a bit wonky in places - made an almost impossible to notice difference

hopefully i'll be able to take it in to a local garage this week to get checked on the computer.

Taking it in tomorrow AM to get it hooked up to a computer to see if there is a problem with the MAF or Sensors - apparently replacing an air sensor is around £50 for the part and £90 for the MAF sensor - doh

Update: The computer couldn't find any problems, so he checked the connections for the MAF and Air sensor, and cleaned them and they seem to be fine. I may see if I can take my friends TDI passat for a drive to see if his is the same?
