    Car Insurance

I've got a few questions about car insurance. I'm 17 years old, and am learning to drive. I might be buying a Ford Fiesta soon, but my insurance premiums are 2k plus.

Because of this, my dad has offered to have the insurance policy in his name, with me as a named driver. This brings the premium down to around £900 for the year.

Is this illegal in any way? My dad will be driving the car on weekends to get to football, as he's currently selling his Audi A4 since he doesn't use it much now he has a new job, and a work van.

I know that lots of people do this with their insurance, but I don't want to end up having a crash, and not being covered.

    Thanks

    Technically yes it's illegal.

The insurance policy holder is normally the "MAIN" driver, not the occasional driver.

Well for the first few months, my dad will be the main driver, as I'll only be using it a few hours a week for practice. As for when I've passed, are insurance companies generally lenient on this sort of thing? It seems like everyone does it, and it's the only way to get a reasonable premium.

Thanks for the links. Looks like I'll have to rethink that idea then. Why is TPF&T on a 10 year old 1.0 fiesta so damn high? £2470 is ridiculous.

    What area are you in?
What security does the car have?
    How old are you?
    Have you done/doing PassPlus?

    South Manchester, M22
    Manufacturer standard alarm + immobiliser
17, getting quotes based on being 18
    Will be doing passplus

I just got a quote on 17to40, and was quoted £1474 for TPF&T on a P reg 1.3 Fiesta. That's the cheapest I've found by miles . Never heard of them before though

Insurance for young drivers is expensive because the insurance company aren't too worried about what you're driving. It's what you'll drive in to...

    THAT's the expensive part...

the insurance company will make a huge difference. my first year's insurance had quotes varying from £700 to £2400. this year, it's £570 to £1800.

I've been on my rents insurance for over a year and a half now. 1.4l Pug 306 LX. Dad as main, mum as named, me as named (to boot the premiums down through no-claims).

Luckily, as we've been with Direct Line, named drivers collect no-claims, so I'm earning them now. I'm not a stupid driver, and don't actually intend to make a claim, and will get my own insurance once i've got 2 years no-claims.

Funnily enough, I priced up insurance on a new Dodge Caliber for myself (2.0l beefy jobby) and it turned up less for me as the main driver, fully comp per month than me as a named on the 1.4 pug only TPF&T... no idea how that works.

Need to be earning enough to get me the Dodge Caliber now

The best quote ive had for me and my 1992 1.1 Punto is 1400 quid from Quinn Direct. Not looking to my first year of paying insurance Although with it all being in my name, I guess I will be glad of it in a few years.
