    Thanks for the quick response.
I do boot straight to X and use the console occassionally for my main display.
I'm not too concerned with acessing the console on the psone lcd and could do without it.
I checked my Kernel config and everything you metioned is enabled and compiled in or as modules.
I then looked in /dev and I already have the fb0 - fb7 character devices there.

I'm running SimplyMepis (Debian based) with kernel 2.6.7.
The fbset command does not exist and if it's only used for the console on the lcd then I don't need it.
My main concern is getting X to work correctly.
I have tinkered with XF86Config with different setting and can get the lcd to display
what is supposed to be my desktop but it's looks real bad.
I see thick vertical black lines dividing up the image and thin horizontal lines breaking it up.
It does display a single desktop which is good but its not usable in it's current state.

I tried to figure out how to convert Powerstips setting to a usable modeline and that could be whats holding me back.
Here are my Power Strip settings...

    The default 640x480i (Arcade) resolution

    Pixel Clock 12.696
    Composite Sync Checked
    Sync on Green Unchecked
    Interlaced Checked
    Horizontal and Vertical Polarity Negative
Only Real-time adjustment checked under Options

    For Horizontal Geometry
    Scan rate 15.870kHz
    Active 640 pixels 50.410us
    Front porch 32 pixels 2.520us
    Sync width 64 pixels 5.041us
    Back porch 64 pixels 5.041us
    Total 800 pixels 63.012us

    For Vertical Geometry
    Refresh rate 30.286Hz
    Active 480 lines 30.246ms
    Front porch 6 lines 0.378ms
    Sync width 8 lines 0.504ms
    Back porch 30 lines 1.890ms
    Total 524 lines 33.018

Maybe you can convert this into a good modeline and a working monitor section for me?
Also, without a modeline entry the lcd won't kick on.

Question LCD help, tips and pointers NEEDED!!

    Hi Guys,
As I have had very little and poor responce from the bit-tech forums so I thought I'd try you guys.

Got my Matrox Mystique in and running the PSONE LCD (along side a ASUS AGP gfx card), only problem is that I cannot get the image display to fill the screen. WHY? I have the c-sync and interlaced on, fiddled with settings til my eyes fell out.. I get nice colours and a reasonably crisp pic, but there is a deffinate 5mm - 8mm thick black strip along the top and bottom. PLEASE HELP!

Heres a pic of the screen with the stips top and botton:

These are the POWERSTRIP settings I am using:

I have the screen set to 640 x 480 at the mo as the MATROX card refuses to accept 720 x 576 setting in POWERSTIP. Asks me to restart, once back, the MATROX card need uninstall/reinstall to be visable in the XP display settings again. (also will someone put the record straight and tell us ALL the PSONE LCD true res, is it 640 x 480 OR 720 x 576?). I have not used the resistor mod, but I have the RGBs ground to their respective gounds. (actually the RGB grounds are all ground together, is this the prob?). I have run out of ideas and getting low on inspiration. (spent weeks on this mod now and its sending me bananas )

Also, does anyone know if the ATI RADEON 7000 support c-sync? Anyone got the LCD screen running on one successfully?

BTW, a PCI slot power adaptor from www.maplin.co.uk powers the PSONE LCD nicely.

If I remember rightly, the actual res of the PSOne LCD is 360*288. I reckon your res being at 640x480 is the cause of your gap. Have you tried simply messing with PStrip's image width and height buttons, rather than the timings?

I would imagine the Rad 7000 supports c-sync - my rad 9000 does. It does depend on who put the board together though.

Just a simple question and i am suprised noone else did ask this before... Everyone is talking about the VGA cable but noone tells anything about this cable itself! Today all cables are molted so you cant open the conector of the VGA cable only solution is to cut the cable but then you never know what wire goes to what pin... beside the fact that some cables also have ground arround there single cable and arround the whole cable as well ground again.... So who is going to explain me this???? i have in my hand a VGA cable one side have the plug to connect it to the videocard the other end is cut and have a lot of wires....

Wonder who can explain me how they did the connection of the cable it self not how to solder it on the pcb of the psone.. (drawing of pics would be nice)

    Thanks

bwr014: I used CAT5 for my cabling, however I can think of a solution for you.

Use a multimeter set to continuity testing. It'll be tricky, but you'd need to touch the required pin on the VGA connector, then find the wire that gives you continuity. Thinking about it... that would be really hard to do :S.

No I soldered straight onto the graphics card, although I do have a tendency to things a little extreme Your method sounds good though.

I have quite a length of CAT5 (~1m) at the moment and am concerned it's affecting signal quality. However I cannot test it again until I get my new box sorted, which will be within a couple of weeks.

I see... i just need first than to figure out about the correct vga card then seems to get complete lost here what is now the correct card to use... i understand now that composite synic is just the tulpplug on that card so if it is there you know it will support it. Pitty is that those cards have only 1 vga output so a second monitor is not possible again because it is AGP and you only have 1 AGP in your motherboard. They advice me this card: Asus V9400 M/T MX4000 128Mb with this info: D-sub, S-VHS & Composite so i assum that one will work without any complicated extra prints ect. Just solder the wires and it should work?... ( i hope

Thanks for your quick response to me Kez

I'm using a Radeon 9000 - connecting my main monitor through a DVI>VGA converter, wiring the PSOne to the VGA connector on the PCB.

Alternatively, a Matrox PCI card to run the PSOne off should work, I understand many of their cards support C-Sync.

I just notice i have this card: http://www.vr-zone.com/reviews/MSI/FX5600/4.jpg

what would be wrong with this one?

I am also going for the direct approch then with solder direct on the VGA card i see it is build up out of 3 ranges i see small wires go on the board from pin 1 2 and 3 ... but pin 6 7 and 8 dont show any wire so i assum that somewhere inside they go to the ground or so ( just will solder 3 wires on it and put them all together to 1 that will be mounted in the pcb of the psone.

It seems a lot of nVidia cards don't support C-Sync. Download power strip and see if the c-sync option is available to you.
