    Project Silicon....

Well now that Project Bad Apple is complete its time to start working on my next project.

I was dissapointed that the apple case was a bit too big for me as I've got used to having a small shuttle sized pooter, so I wanted my next project to be something smaller but still have a good sized mobo.

I remembered mashie's entry to this years CPL Project Oenone and had a look at the size and it was perfect. I managed to source a Silicon Graphics O2 via ebay but not through it. It cost £122 with scsi cdrom and psu both of which will be ditched obviously. ( Project Oenone : http://www.mashie.org/casemods/oenone01.html)

Clearly this isnt the first time some1 has done this mod and I have to give big credit to mashie for the idea in the first place. I will be trying my hardest to make it different where possible. I have a long term idea that would be very different but cost could be very preventative.

Any enough of my waffle. Here is some pics (ALL PICS ARE THUMBNAILS CLICK ON THEM FOR 800x600 shots):

I only got the case this morning and here it is:

I then set about taking it apart it took some time to work out how exactly to do this but I got there in the end.

First thing to do now was to give it a bloomin good scrub so I took the plastic parts into the bathroom to clean the dust off

    Before:

    After:

This is going to be a very tight fit to get the board and everything in place eeek.

I had to check that the dvd writer would fit so heres it side by side with the stock drive:

Looks like its the same size.

And finally here is a shot with project bad apple in the background to give u and idea of the scale.

As usual more pics can be found in my Gallery of the project

Apple is too big for fussy old me Its cm500 size and I want a matx sized case. The sgi is the best alternative short of a full custom build which would be hard with the setup I have in this house.

I'm not entirely sure yet. It will be sold more as a barebones unit as the mobo / psu are set up for it. Send me a pm if you are really interested and I will try to sort a rough price.

Going to be the same specs as the apple , I will be using an identical board. I will be using a SATA hdd and connecting my dvdwriter through one also. The psu will be a 200W version

    Quick update from today.

I've not had a chance to do too much work today but, I've spent the day taking measurements and working out what will go where.

Its going to be tight but the aluminium sheeting that arrived today gives me as much room to play with as possible. It will be in 3 main sections.

A motherboard section, a main case section and a back panel section. The backpanel is going to be held in by four special thumbscrews which I will show you next week hopefully.

Also today I had a quick look at how I was going to mount the drive facia. This is going to be relatively easy a lot easier than I imagined its almost a perfect match for the existing tray. shaving 2mm of each end and it will fit perfectly.

I'm off on holiday next week so no chance for me to work on it then unfortunatly but the week after I will attack it in ernest.

It's a nice size for a case, my Lian li PC 30 is the same size as CM 500, which is just a bit too large for what I want and Shuttles are so passe

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been away and very busy.

I've not had a chance to do much as I'm waiting on parts to arrive mainly a motherboard.

    I've recieved some aluminium sheet

And I've cut two pieces one for the back panel one for the mobo panel. I've not had a chance to bend them yet hopefully I can do that this week.

I had a quick check to see how the dvd writer would fit the existing case and it looks fine a bit of trimming to do but otherwise perfect.

Finally I had one of the parts arrive this morning I'll leave it up to you to decide how I'm going to use them hehe

They are actual casino dice used for no more than 8hrs , they are a lovely translucent red colour.
