    Blu-ray winning out over HD-DVD

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6762621.stm

"Film rental firm Blockbuster is to rent high-definition DVDs in the Blu-ray format only at 1,450 of its US stores.

The move is viewed as a blow for the rival Toshiba-backed HD DVD format - which has been battling against the Blu-ray format, supported by Sony.

Blockbuster said that consumers have chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD in the 250 stores where both were available.

The limited choice of titles in the HD DVD format was also a factor in focusing on Blu-ray, Blockbuster said"

yup, its outselling the hd-dvd 3to1 and was the first high-def media to enter the top 10 at amazon, there was a blog i read at insomnia studio's saying you could cut and chop any game to fit on a dvd but you want a high def experience right!!!, take gears of war lovely game super high res textures all done by epics superb texture streaming but using that can be costly on space, each level is a bout a gig so your limited to so many levels, also with all ps3's having blu-ray and a hard drive their not limited!!!. And then you get stranglehold game with hard boiled blu-ray film all on 1 disc!! its early days

That is simply not true. The increased capacity of blu ray and HD DVD is not yet needed for games, and it will not be required for sometime to come. The idea that bigger media equates to better games is absurd. Do you think Epic would have made GOW twice as long if they were making it on HD DVD/BR?

well according to the blog that the main dev wrote on insomnias website, its all true, he was comparing it to resistance and he went on to explain how gears of war used texture streaming, that the unreal 3 engine can do, and also how any game can be chopped and cut to fit on a dvd, but with all the high def technology we will start seeing more storage needed. his words not mine, but i've no reason to not believe him.
Which makes me think if resistance is 16gb, how easy would it of been for them to break it down to dvd, and what would be the losses??? would we even notice?????

Oblivion, which looks very good, can easily fit on 1 dvd.

With good programming, space shouldn't be an issue. Games will expand out to fit the space available, but the extra space doesn't mean a better game.

Play this game and see what can be done with constraints of space:
    http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=%...a.zip&fileinfo

It only takes up 100kb, but is a full 3d shooter with a variety of weapons and enemies. Gears of war takes up about 100000 times as much space, but doesn't use it as efficiently.

Not even close. BD has only just managed to get its nose in front of HD-DVD for monthly sales and it will fluctuate between them each month depending on what titles are released on each format.

    err no.

Blu-ray discs have been outselling hd-dvd by more that two to one since the beginning of the year and the gap is widening.

    err, where?

It would be nice to see this format war decided asap, whichever the victor, but it isn't looking like that is going to happen for some time.

Anyone getting sick of these reports of one is winning? The truth is: neither is mainstream yet - the players cost too much money and content is sparse. How are DVD sales by comparison?

Neither will matter by the time their replaced anyway. There will be more focus on streaming and on demand services by that time. And yes dangel it is very boring indeed considering it is still very early days and HD Disks/players are still to expensive for the average consumer. Though I will say this; with blue-ray costing more to manufacturer won't the price of blue-ray films stay higher for longer than HD-DVD? If this is the case HD-DVD could pounce ahead of blue-ray. The average consumer will go for what is cheapest, they don't know about or even care to know about what the better format it.

the cost of blu-ray is coming down, so is the price of the players, you could go an get a nice cheap blu-ray player and play games on it as well , i'm interested in how well blu-ray do because i have a blu-ray player and i want lots and lots of films to come out on blu-ray format, so it seems the better it does compared to hd-dvd the more films will be released??? The only reason why i'm interested...

Certain companies only back certain formats so until one format is being totally obliterated in sales, I don't think that we will see 'more' blu-ray films, just an increased number on both formats.

I really think companies should make films for all formats, its obviously going to help their sales, i mean big deal if its on blu-ray and hd-dvd. I suppose its giants like sony or microsoft that can pay big monies for exclusives. sux really

Now that BD+ DRM has been finalised Fox are about to dump half their back-catalogue into Blu-Ray discs, which can only help sales given the various cash-cow series Fox holds onto, not to mention all the movies.
