Ah well, ended up with a Panasonic 50" 1080p for £1425 in the end. Couldn't take one home, have to wait for delivery on Sunday.

I'm very glad you got a Panny rather than Samsung.
Can't really stand Samsung, I know too many folk that have had shoddy service from them, myself included.
I'm sure you'll love it, may you have much fun with it (and may you take many pics and post them here ?!)
Well, it arrives in 15 mins, I am very excited!!!

Photos !!?
Give him a chance
Depending on how nerdy he is, he'll either be
- Calibrating it (with varying degrees of complexity, again depending on nerdiness)
- Naming all the inputs for all the kit he has (then swapping kit round and angrily re-naming)
- Sitting open-gobbed at the sheer beauty of HD on a big screen
- Sitting open-gobbed at the sheer horror of SD on a big screen
- Hunting through his HD media for the best examples of picture quality (and then making sure no-one's about when he realises all his best clips are pr0n)
- Reading the manual
- Building the stand
- Tidying cables
- Looking for dead/stuck pixels
- Sawing a bit off his existing stand !
But I'd guess he's simply sitting enjoying it with a game !
And what I hope he's not doing, is sitting cursing some problem or other. Hope it lives up to expectations fella !
lol, yeah I just spent all day in front of the TV, watched 300, palyed some mass effect and ace combat 6 co-op and some ****e TV.
Its my birthday today as well and I have been a bit hungover so i didn't want to move. One thing I was surprised qat is the sheer weight of the thing, My missus litterally couldnt help me lift it and i had to get my neighbour a knock to give me a hand.
but here it is in all its glory!

For some reason, i can only get my xbox to run in 1080i and not 1080p, I suspect its because I am using component and not HDMI. Anybody have any experience with that?

Looks great... iirc my 50" was about 40kg (but its a plasma and its 5 years old)....
happy birthday
Can't really help you with xbox, but afaik you need special equipment to be able to do 1080p over component... you need compatible cable, compatible tv, and is the xbox even 1080p compatible over component?
Not sure about the 360 dilemma, the 360 can certainly output 1080p over component, and it's relatively easy to send 1080p through a decent cable, but maybe the set doesn't accept it ?
You're a brave man gaming on it already Or aren't there any more screen burn warnings in the manuals now ?
Anyway, Happy Birthday and thanks for the pics. Get some in the AV kit thread.

I'm sure I had the option to run my 360 at 1080p over component, but I've just literally changed over to HDMI in anticipation of SkyHD, otherwise I would test it for you.

Yup, no need to pay more than a tenner for HDMI.
It's a stereo amp you have though, isn't it ? If so, just use the analogue outs from the set (which I'm sure you're already doing ?). You'd possibly get better results hooking up to the 360 analogue out directly, but I don't know if it allows you to do that at the same time as HDMI out (as my 360 doesn't have HDMI), though I know the PS3 does, that's how I have mine connected.
Re: the 1080i 360 thing, although your set displays 1080p, sadly that's no guarantee that it will accept 1080p over component. Many TV sets simply no likee 1080p any way other than HDMI. Mine included
That is a bit of a shame and does seem to fit with what happens when I try to switch to 1080p.
I would rather use the stereo connections from the xbox direct into the amp, if I use HDMI will I be forced to run a set of RCA from the TV to the amp? Not a huge issue but not really ideal considering lip syncing issues and the fact that at the moment I am using the Xbox for DVD as well.
