Right, well damn. I'm now over 3000 posts up on these forums, I think I've contributed my fair share, so I'm going to be a a bit cheeky and start a thread which will require some Rules To Be Adhered To. I can't enforce them since I'm not a mod, but I hope the spirit of friendship and co-operation will keep this thread alive.
Basically what I want every music lover on these forums to do is to suggest a track which they think is unjustifiably obscure, underappreciated etc, and to provide the reasons why they love it, and why anyone else should be interested in it. The rest of us can read the thread, and then if we're interested go and listen to the track in question, be it by checking out Amazon/ITunes's free previews, or by getting the album out of our local library (to help out, post the album the track is from if you can). Be sensible though- suggesting 'Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen' because 'the guitar bit with the headbanging at the end roXor!!1!11' is likely to be a waste of time, since 99% of people will have heard it already- similarly posting anything by ANY band currently in the charts is likely to invoke ridicule- save yourselves the embarrasment. Something which just dented the charts a year or so ago though is fair game- do your best to explain why the song deserved more airtime.
This thread is absolutely NOT to encourage music piracy, it's to spread the word about underappreciated music to people who might appreciate it, and then go and buy it. To keep the quality high (and this is the Crucial Rule), each member should suggest no more the ONE track PER WEEK. If this thread lives, you'll have 52 opportunities in the next year to suggest all your favourite songs, so lets keep the quality high eh? Having said that, the genre of music you suggest is entirely up to you:- anything from 50's Rock 'n Roll to 00's Trance via 60's Psychedelia and 80's Thrash Metal is welcome.
I'll start then: I recommend The Birds And The Bees by Patrick and Eugene (a.k.a. Patrick Dawes). This is the music to the Gordon's Gin advert where everyone has drinks chucked in their faces. The whole song is groovy, but it has a nice breezy vocal section (not in the advert), and the funkiest bassline I've heard for a long time.
I'll look a right plonker if no-one gets involved in this thread, so please for my sake join in. I love music so much that I'm well prepared to embrace the suggestions of random strangers to expand my horizons.
Cheers,
Rich :¬)
EDIT: Silent Ben has done a roundup of the first week's suggestions- it's here:
