If you are on a tight budget and can get the 10d very cheap it is still a worthy buy.

I still shoot both film and digital, film is, some may not agree, more fun, especially with my rangefinder But tbh for newbie shooting film will just burn a hole in their wallet

prosumer compacts have very little shutter lag - you can bung manual focusing/levels into one and it'll snap just as quckly as a low-end slr (i had an is-s2 and now a 400d). it'll do lots of stuff better, its just not as upgradable as an slr. as an introduction to photography i honestly recon they're hard to beat for the money

in publishing film is more hastle than digital - shoot film, got to get it processed and then scanned, and then it will more or less go through the same digital editing as digital camera pic..

shooting digital you don't have to worry about film and processing cost i've saved over £12K shooting digital over the past 3 years.. and photographers who do shoot more have saved much more than that..

the late Lord Lichfield switched his allegiance from film to digital in 1999 claiming to save £75,000 per year in film roll..

I'm in a similar position to the OP - thinking I could get into taking photos as a little hobby - and have been looking at Fuji S5600 (£130) or Fuji S6500fd (£220).

I like the twisty manual zoom on the F6500 but not sure if this justifies the extra cash?

    Any other recommendations....?

Manual zoom worth every penny you spend on it, trust me

Had a play on a S9600 in PC World on the way home, is very niiiice (but I don't want to spend £350)*

Will deffo get the S6500 over the S5600. Manual zoom FTW!!!11!

But, they had a S9500 for only £250 vs £220 for the S6500 (I know I could it get a few quid cheaper online, but it's a hassle getting something delivered vs 'collect@store'). I presume the S9500 is the old top of the line model, replaced by the S9600. How does it compare to the S6500 though ?

*EDIT: amazon do it for £265 - think I can cope with delivery if it saves £80+
