Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

Looks very interesting, but how big is the download? If it's much more than a gig, then will have to unfortunately let it pass . They don't seem to be able to get a european publisher either, so won't be able to wait for it to be released either.

Yeah the download is very small, it's not a large game (as fare as file sizes go at least ).

Downloaded it last night and have only had time to play the tutorials for now. Reminds of a cross between Homeworld and a quite an old game, Pax Imperia I think. So far, so good.

I played through a short mission on easy to get the hang of it, wasn't too bad at all. Not tried it on higher difficulties yet.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

Nope, I've had to resort to putting it onto Hard mode and i'm still winning without issue.

I'm thinking of going me vs teamed computers as next difficulty step up.

Game does require some learning without doubt, finding a small asteroid planet to start with gaining that quickly with 4 of the first frigates and getting your first capital ship asap to get a proper planet after that is key.

Once you've established this basic 4 ish planets captured you usually start encountering enemies. I like using a 2/3rds 1/3rd fleet setup. 2/3rds on attack 1/3rds on defence.

Oh and don't forget to bribe the pirates not to attack you, IT MAKES so much difference at the start!.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

Yeah, I just got a decent 2v2 going with the AI on a medium map and I am now really getting into it. I have 3 large fleets and 6 or 7 capital ships and when I get home I am gonna go take out those pesky pirates.

TiG, your spot on about bribing them at the start, I think that is the biggest change in my tactics this time around and it seems to be working.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

Played through a couple of skirmish missions to get to grips with all the options. I have to say this game is awesome; great scale, tons of configurables - once you've progressed though the tech tree - and it looks pretty damn fine too. Even without a manual it's pretty straightforward to figure out what's what. I love how I can chose to go in for a quick battle or a complex time-sapping experience depending on what frame of mind I'm in - a little over 8 hours straight on my last skirmish.

It's a shame there isn't a campaign mode - it'd probably open up the game to a wider audience if there had been one, but I'm happy with what is there. My only gripe is down to the lack of dual monitor support.

If Stardock treat this title like they have with Galactic Civ II then it's going to be a game that only going to improve over time.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.
