It's a shame that the classes aren't really different at all... the ships of the 3 races are the same, just renamed

Nah they are different, they all have the same types of frigates, like light frigates and anti-fighter/bomber frigates, and they all have a heavy cruiser and a carrier cruiser. But the other two cruisers are completely different for each race, and each ship has a unique researchable ability depending on the race. Then you have things like the Advent ships are weaker than the others, but they take up less logistics slots and and are cheaper so you can have more of them.

The capital ships are also really different, they all have one ship that can colonise, one ship that's got a lot of fighters, one that's got lots of guns and one that is good at bombarding planets, but their abilities are very different and weapons load outs are completely different depending on the race.

The other thing to really say is awesome is the random maps, if you really want a challenge play on these, IT really feels completely random and in some cases really biased. You have to really fight or travel a long way with a crap intial location.

War for me sometimes deals you a crap hand and in this game you can overcome it with strategy. Resources aren't the be all and end all of this game. Playing and planning your expansion and defence against AI opponents is great.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

I have played through, it took me about 6 Hours to finish the first single player scenario, 1 v 1 it wasnt that hard once I got to understand the re-search and tech tree. It was fun, pirates were annoying lol.

But what turned me off was that every scenario starts off new, I thought when I finish the first scenario, I can play the second one with my fleet in tact, all the upgraded ships etc but no....guess that would become too easy...but great game, real fun to zoom all the way out and micromanage....somehow im always short on crystal

Remember the black market.... if you are always short on crystal you can buy some.
Or just concentrate on upgrading the crystal mining tech at the start...

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

Ok I was playing the first one and gave up as I was getting annoyed...

I think they were the vasari people or something, me too.

Basically the AI does a rush with it's planet destroyers. 4 of them can get into a system, take out the planet, and get out before early capital ships / frigates can destroy them. It's a joke!

Not to mention some 'creative' stats. Even though I had more money, more resources, more planets, they were still churning out according to the stats much higher production than me.

Put me off for now I think... I've played a fair bit of homeworld and all that and it doesn't seem that balanced. Early game there's no way to stop their planet-destroyer frigates because the armour is really strong. Hell even on a random map it takes ages to take them down. I guess they're supposed to be expensive, but I rushed for the third planet, within 2-3 minutes I would guess I had it - they brought 4 straight into the system, ignored my cap and 5 little t1 frigates you get to start with, took out the planet and left. I've found defences aren't brilliant except the fighter bases, but maybe that's just me...

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

Yes, the Vasari planet destroyers move fast and have devastating weaponry, today I was playing a scenario against the Vasari, I have built around 14 Cannon defenses in the likely attack area and I have upgraded the planet's health to full, now when the destroyers come through, they get destroyed before they can damage the planet much...but yes, it is off putting, and same goes for the stats..

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

I'm gonna patch, been reading the official forums and apparently it happens fairly often. It's been address in one of the patches though that so they can't tank and simply early game go to your planet, kill the population and leave taking maybe 1 loss. First time I won I was playing as the psychic dudes and they were great, upgrade all their bombers and literally have a carrier fleet far away and bomb everything to death. The second time I was playing as vasari and their fighters aren't as good. So will have to think of a new stategy.

Whenever I play strategy games I tend to be massively expansionist, with little to no defence and capture every planet I can. Then when they attack, use whatever I have to slow them down whilst my economy of scaled production brings in massive reinforcements. This doesn't work against those things because of their hit and run tactics where they go exclusively for the planet. So my cap ship and 5 frigates can't stop them, even though if we put this into strategy game terms (warcraft 3?) - it's like a hero and 5 soldiers not being able to take out 4 siege engines before they take out your town centre. Just daft...

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

I think Vasari fighters are better later on because you can upgrade the armour on them, which you can't on the other races. The other nice thing about Vasari are the Phase Stabiliser Nodes, which I find handy to use to move my defnese fleets around between border planets.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire

Im more defense oriented, I capture 2 - 3 Planets early in the game (re-searching the resources in the mean while) Play with TEC, build their cobalt frigates, Then when I have 3 Planets or so, I concentrate on defenses, fortify them, then Built trade posts and Orbital refinaries, then I focus on all military researches, then fleet size and then capital ship captains, then I build fleets of 2, 3 Capital ships in each group along with several frigates, then I divide them in to conquering fleets and defending fleets, leave the defending fleets at the planets most vulnerable and take the assault fleets to planets and capture them, Then once I have more planets under my empire, I focus on other re-searches, economy, culture, once I am strong enough, I go ahead and take what is mine! lol works for me everytime.....
