    Ultima Online at work?

    Hi there,

Our company recently changed to Solution1 as their ADSL provider and as default i believe the firewall blocks all ports that are not needed. Now this is bad if i want to play UO at work!

I have scoured the net looking for someone to explain how they personally did it and see if I could do the same but alas, no-one has done so.

Now so far, I have used all the trace tools etc and it seems I can ping the patch servers, login servers etc no problems - thats with a command prompt AND the UO Trace utility. But when i launch the patcher for UO - it cannot connect to the server. it hangs saying: connecting to 159.153.197.91:8888

    etc

So i downloaded winsocks (just to try!!) and tried using recommended settings for this, all combinations of settings etc but to no avail. I didn;t have a Proxy server address to type in i think.

ANyway, I was of course clutching at straws anyway but I usually have a knack of teaching myself stuff in this way (easy or hard way!).

Oh forgot to mention, i checked out which ports needed opening on the Uo.com tech site, and i got those to be forwarded by Solution1 - which i presume is why the pings work ok - but the damn client won't connect to the patch server?!!?

    ANY IDEAS PLEASE?!?

    Thanks,

    Daz

Just a thought, and I've no idea if it would work, but how about remote networking into your home machine and running UO from there.

MobyDick was telling me the other night of some way of setting your home machine up as a proxy to browse the web through... but about three seconds into the conversation I was lost and so I just nodded wisely while desperately trying to think of something to say that wouldn't make me sound stupid...

hmmmm thanks deckard.. thats food for thought! When I was burgled at christmas I turned into a paranoid bastard and bought a wireless survelliance mini-cam with night vision! LOL and my aim was to host a web-server with a web-cam window (which i did get set up) and view it live at work on the web. Trouble is, when I tried viewing it from work - it wouldn't work at all.
After weeks of trying to make sure I had set it up correctly at home to allow people to connect to my computer at home - i eventually gave up. I think it may have been settings on my router which I couldn't figure out.

So basically, yes I think that may well work in theory (in fact , the UO site says as much) but I am unsure as to the ins and outs of it...if anyone wants to step up to the plate and guess as to what I was doing wrong or give detailed explanations of how to do what Deckard describes - I'd be very happy!

    Cheers

IF you can get out to the home machine with the rdp protocol then it should work.
If the firewall that they installed has a stateful inspection then even a http port redirect wont work as it checks the contents of the packets.

sorry to sound dumb - but whats the rdp protocol? (Remote Desktop 'something'?)
On my home machine, how would i set it up to recieve remote desktop access?
I presume i would have to check that in 'System' the 'Allow remote users to connect to this machine' is checked, but what else?
I have a NAT Router (from Ebuyer - the Origo one, can get exact model if needed) running in DCHP, I have Zonelarm as a software firewall too. I presume I would have to find out the ports that remote access uses and then forward them on the router?

I am not a newbie and theres a lot I DO know - but some networking stuff is beyond my expertise mainly because i've never had to do it before... so any help would be appreciated!

    Cheers!

Remote Desktop Protocol, you are pretty close on all the things that you say, I'd say just google RDP and router/firewall and you will be ok. I would have to google it too.
