Regardless of which console is better, always go for the console the majority of your friends own, it's a far better experience playing with someone else compared to playing alone. The PS4 has been proven to be more powerful, in terms of specs, and recently released games. AC4, Thief, BF4, Watch_Dogs all run at a lower resolution on the XB1, and those are only the games I can think of from the top of my head. Also, if you want the Kinect, you'll have to pay a significant amount more than the PS4, but if you don't, just wait until the Kinect-less XB1's release.
Then there's games and franchises, PS has the Uncharteds, TLOU's, GT, GoWs, Killzones, Infamous' etc, while XB has the Halo, Gears, Forza, Tintanfall etc.
So if you're used to a set of games, you should take that in to consideration, but honestly, the main factor is your friends, I bought my PS3 on day 1 and had a blast with it since 99% of my friends were on Playstation, but around 5 years down the road I bought a 360, and within a month it was collecting dust as I simply had no one to play with online, and quickly finished the two main franchises; Halo and Gears.
In all honesty, I'd hold on for the time being. I got a PS4 and it's barely switched on...I've probably spent more time using 'Live From Playstation' to look at the video feeds from the freaks out there than I have actually playing games.
Give it six months and you'll be better for it. I got swept up by the hype, but the time since release has been pretty barren and I could easily have gone without. The PS+ releases for PS3 have been great.
The PS+ monthly releases are the only reason I haven't dove in to the PS4 boat just yet, I still have a large backlog of PS3 games including Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry, MG Rising and a few others, and I'm sure June's free games will be fantastic since it's the month of E3.
I think I'll pick up a PS4 during Christmas. Already bought Killzone 4 through a store glitch for 85p! Infamous Second Son should be a lot cheaper by then, and Planetside 2 might also be out! Hoping to pick up a PS4 for around £310, cheapest I've seen so far is £314 at Tesco with a code.
You're doing the right thing mate. I've got no more space on my ps3 hdd due to all the goodies..I need to play them as it's an insult not to. Remember Me is next on the list!

Spec is regardless in term for consoles. I base this question on two things when ever contemplating which next gen console i should get. 1. Which consoles will the majority of my friends be on & 2. Importance of console exclusives respectively.
So Xbox has Halo, thats a major pull factor for me, titanfall is there too, & more releases like quantum break and sunset overdrive and it gets constant favouring over PS4 in terms of DLC release etc. Im also very used to xbox controls and the majority of my friends play on it
PS4 - Last of Us, Uncharted, Killzone - not much else, not many friends play on it, never got used to the small babyish controller, heard PS+ exclusives are great but i don't mind xbox exclusives either.
For me its Xbox. The upcoming releases are so huge that i just can't shy away. I was a huge cod guy and so Xbox being favourable in terms of DLC is important to me, especially for next gen treyarch games. I love Halo with all my heart too, and its also one of the major reasons why im going towards xbox, oh and gears of war 4!

The PS4 is better than the Xbox One in my opinion... However, you definitely want to buy the console that all your friends have.
