You sure it's not Delta Turbines ?

Mine screams it's little white butt off but all I do is sit on the settee and turn the TV higher to drown out the noise.

These graphs do look to be rather suspect though. I knew the xbox would be loud - but hey when it's under the TV and you've got it all in 5.1 with the sound of bullets raining down around you it's not really something your going to notice.

Is it the fans or the dvd drive that makes the majority of the whooshing sound when gaming?

The wooshing is the fan (love that word ) and the annoying whirring sound is the drive.

I think the 360 is loud too, would be handy to silence it but with all the previous overheating issues aaound launch time it would make me nervous

So it is worth looking into some quieter fans then.

I could learn to love whooshing if it was Wiis that did it

My PS3 is dead quiet too. Maybe a bit louder than a Wii as it has a small 5400rpm 2.5inch HDD and a few fans, but it's not noticeable more than a metre or two away, unlike a 360 which would just drive me mad.

So whilst you've correctly said the Wii is a lot quieter than the 360, I'll say a PS3 is also a lot quieter than the 360, although may be slightly noisier than a Wii, although the increase in noise is nothing compared to those delta-wooshing-turbine fans of the 360.

I have to admit that the amount of noise the 360 makes in games is annoying. It means I cant subtley play on it at 3 in the morning with headphones on, as the rest of the house can hear it going!!!! Its a good thing i'm dedicated to my gaming
Well, I can cut it in half!

when i used to have a 360 it really was unacceptably loud, the fans weren't too bad but the dvd drive was ridiculous. It was a hitachi drive, i've heard the newer ms028 samsung drives are much quieter now though.

    Re: Console Noise Levels

I recently swapped out my PS3, as I was getting a lot of fan noise. It was loud enough to muffle out film dialogues which was really annoying. Anyway, Playstation Careline swapped it out, and the new one is the same !!!!.... yet my brothers PS3 hardly makes any noise. Luck of the draw....

Bazza, this is nearly a two-year old thread!

Anyway, the old 60GB PS3 is a little noisier than the newer 40GB / 80GB PS3s which have the smaller 45nm Cell CPU in them.

It could be that if you had an early console, they replaced it with the same type (of older CPU) which makes more heat therefore has noisier fans.

Now I have a second PS3, but a 20GB version, it's noticably quieter than the 60GB. the latter you can hear when folding or watching blu-rays. The 20GB is near silent.

    Re: Console Noise Levels

I bought a Talismoon "Whisper" Max fan for my 360.
Learn by my mistake, it's as loud as the stock fan (ie very)

I did manage to slow down the DVD drive to 8x (from 12X) which made a big difference to the in-game noise. Load speed seem pretty much the same.
    Thank goodness for custom firmware.
