Were you even playing games in the 16bit golden age? Sonic was a revelation.

Its the only time a mascot and a game have been able to stand side by side with Nintendo and Mario, with an equally famous and successful mascot (at the time) and games that are as good.

Sonic 1 and 2 are all time top games. There is no argument.

Sonic2 in paticular had that same flowing, clever, slick gameplay that Nintendo gave us with Super Mario World, just with its own hook - the speed.

I still enjoy playing both of them on XBLA to this day, and really only Mario and Zelda games from that era are as much fun to play now as they were then.

They are the 2 best selling games on the MegaDrive, both nailed on all time classics, and rightly so.

Its just a shame that when Mario went 3D in the shape of Super Mario 64, it was one of the greatest games ever, and when Sonic went 3D, with Sonic Adventure, it was ok. So it might have been brief, but its still the only time another company played Nintendo at their own game, and matched them.

Quote from Wiki: 'This game propelled the Genesis into mass popularity in North America. After it was released, it eventually replaced Altered Beast as the game bundled with the console, and was later replaced with its first sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The game featured many novel elements which contributed to its popularity and helped to promote the uptake of 16-bit consoles.'

Also: 'The game was both a critical and commercial success. As of November 19, 2007, the game has sold 4 million copies, the second-highest amount for a Genesis game, behind Sonic 2, which has sold 6 million copies.'

And finally: 'The game is widely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time.'

    No arguments.

Metal Gear Solid 1 on the PS you may have a point with. It was a great, great game (and I played the hell out of it) so I think you've turned me on that - any other version, naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
I never mentioned any other version.

Re: Top 5 All Time Games?

Probably a bit different to other lists, and I couldn't stop at 5...

    1. Civilization (the first, and the only game I ever really got to be an expert in)
    2. Ultima Underworld (totally awesome experience at the time)
    3. Heroes 2 (played it to death both SP & MP)
    4. Baldur's Gate 2 (loved BG but this was even better)
    5. Bard's Tale (bought this for 4 different systems so I must have liked it)
    6. Dark Age of Camelot (much preferred this to Everquest and in some areas it is yet to be bettered)
    7. Speedball (the only such game I wasted so much time on - an awesome original)
    8. Final Fantasy 7 (real eye opener and I loved the chocobos)

    Edit: forgot BG2

Re: Top 5 All Time Games?

Personally I rate top games of all time by whether or not I'd want to play through them again, thus my list is as follows

    1) Planescape: Torment - Like Baldur's Gate but with a far richer plot and the setting is a favourite of mine

    2) Oblivion - No matter how much I try, I can't get bored with this game.

    3) Half Life - A classic blend of plot and FPS action

    4) Frontier: Elite 2 - This is the pinnicle of space based trading games, I've not played anything since that captured me so completely. Eve: Online comes close, but unfortunately suffers due to it's intensely PvP outlook

    5) TIE-Fighter - A blast, pure and simple and a chance to fight for the badguys made this very appealing.

    (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/)
    (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=)
    (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(")

This is bunny and friends. He is fed up waiting for everyone to help him out, and decided to help himself instead!

    1. Planescape Torment: story is head and shoulders above all other games

    2. Baldur's Gate 2: Last of the old crpg's :/

    3. System Shock 2: amazing atmosphere, was so far ahead of its time

    4. Half Life 2: great set pieces and smooth as silk.

    5. Football Manager 10: Have gone cold turkey on this, the single most addictive game ever released and fear for my soul if ever get back into another long-term save.

    Mixed platforms ofr me.

    1. SWOS 96/97 Season (Amiga 1200)
    2. Crysis (PC)
    3. Myth (Zx Spectrum)
    4. TV Sports Football (Amiga 500)
    5. Gran Tourismo 3 (PS2)

I keep an Amiga 1200 handy just in case I fancy a weekend lost to SWOS. Still haven't managed it yet in the 4 years I've owned it, but still leaves fond memories....

    In no particular order my fave 5 are;

    Ocarina of Time
    Super Mario World
    Wonderboy in Monsterland
    R-Type
    Kick-Off 2

More for sentimental reasons than anything else really, would probably look a lot different if I took my rose coloured glasses off!

Re: Top 5 All Time Games?

This thread makes me feel old.. just so many great memories but mainly from my youth ( I was 64 / Amiga man ) really hard to compare then and now given the nostalgia factor and sheer innovation back then compared to now.

    Heres some

GOLDEN AXE :Amiga ( I could play this all day for 2 reasons 1. dwarf knokcing folk with the butt of his axe 2. the guitar amp i had it hooked too )
Supermario world: Snes I had competition with a friend to see who could complete it first, unfortunately he did , but I got too Castlevania first
Resident Evil : PLaystation Scary as hell and fun to boot , one of the few games i played daily just to complete , not good replaybility but as one time run great fun back in the day
Monty on the Run : C64 I still remember this game as the mother of all
platformers to complete .. the music by R hubabrd made the game even more insane
Alice pc : I only played this 2 years ago for the 1st time but it was awesome.. i prefer the darker contrast of colours and innovation in this compared to the new one.

Also give a notable mention to Vampire The Masquerade 1st one ( very underrated IMO )

Best non commerical game I played was Depths of Peril .. awesome gameplay / variation on the ol Diablo theme.
