The games I've found most memorable and enjoyable over the years (roughly in chonological order):
Falcon 3.0
Mechwarrior 2
Chrono Trigger
Baldur's Gate Series
Planescape: Torment
Thief 2
Deus Ex
Battlefield 1942
I'd have trouble picking just 5.

1. Return To Castle Wolfenstein
2. Quake
3. Battlefield 2
4. Unreal Tournament 2004
5. Jet Set Willy
1.Monkey Island 2 or Simon the Sorcerer
2.Duke Nukem 3D
3.Grand Theft Auto
4.Rainbow 6
5.Half Life
Honourable metion for CS:S though
It is completely impossible for me to come with just a top 5. I like so many games so much that it would be an injustice to leave them out lol
"I like so many games so much" - Poor use of English translation... "I absolutely love a lot of games".
in no order:
Goldeneye (n64)
super mario all stars (snes)
counter strike 1.6 (pc)
super mario kart (n64)
super mario 64 (n64)
Sonic the Hedgehog
Landstalker
Final Fantasy VII
Shining In The Darkness
Doom
I doubt that all of my top five would be recognised as being some of the best games ever, but in terms of the level of obsession the evoked, and the sheer number of hours dedicated to playing them, they can't be beat IMO.
Shining in the Darkness is widely recognised as being pants, but I can still remember the first time I saw it being demoed in some game shop somewhere, with that 'new game' smell floating around the store, me just tall enough to see over the counter (it was a tall counter) and seeing the cool scaling transition between the map and the level. Just blew me away.

The 5 top games of all time have to be considered on their impact when released as far as I'm concerned this would probably mean from an objective view point:
1) Super Mario Bros.
2) Doom
3) Half Life
4) Street Fighter 2
5) Virtua Racing (arcade) - The first 3D engine racing game
From a cultural impact point of view:
1) Doom - The grandaddy of all FPS
2) Counter Strike - Bringing multiplayer games to the masses
3) Halo - Games get the same budget and treatment as films
4) Mario - The start of the modern era of computer games (i.e. early 90s era , now mainstream as an entertainment form)
5) Space Invaders or Pong - The original games which became known worldwide
From my personal perspective:
1) Command & Conquer (PC)
2) Counter Strike (PC)
3) Dune II (Megadrive)
4) Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (PC)
5) Battlefield 2 (PC)
1) Half life 2 - youc ant beat the story line & how well paced it is.
2) At the opposite end of the sace UT2k4 for me, gotta love the MP side of things.
3) Command & conquer series (Tiberian sun especially)
4) Battlefield 2
5) I liked supreme commander but a slow(ish) PC made it a real test of patience playing.
I havn't forgotten it but it's not on my all time top 5.
"Von Laben!!"
Remember that secret "level 10". Sort of looked like an alien mothership
1) Zelda - Ocarina of time. N64.
Any one who disagrees, simply hasn't played it. It's that good.
2) Mario 64 - N64
3) Doom - Every console ever.
4) Street Fighter II Turbo - The Snes Version.
5) Final Fantasy 7 -PS2
Anyone with any of these games in their list:
Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, GTA, Any Tom Clancy Games (decent though they are), Sonic the Hedgehog in any form; should hang their head in shame, buy an old nintendo console and play some of the highly rated games. Pure magic. That's how it's done.
Honourable mentions from the top of my noggin.
Deux Ex, Counter Strike Source, Mario 1,2,3 and World, Goldeneye and PD, (will throw a curve ball her Deux Ex 2 - the xbox version), Mario Galaxy, Rainbow Six Vegas (made me buy a 360), Mario Kart Snes version, Zelda SNES.
I simply cannot list a top 5. I 'd probably spend hours upon hours deciding.
However, I can list some amazing games:
Panzer Dragoon series (although Panzer Dragoon Saga was truly epic)
Shining Force 3
Nights into dreams
ES4: Oblivion
Command and conquer series
Crusader (was good at the time)
Little big adventure
Zelda series
