Last Ninja 2 : Lost in New York

This was it for me on the Commodore 64. I played through it so many times (It was a multiload on tape also !) and enjoyed it everytime. Graphically it was superb for the 64, in its day I would say it was about the best ever.

    Thief 2

Well this is a classic in its own right. Fantastic visuals and sound. The first one was spoilt by the zombies on it on some of the levels. But this one was amazing, so well put together, nothing beats when you managed to sneak up behind a guard, nick his arrows and purse then knock him out and hide him. Can't wait for Thief 3.

    Secret Of Monkey Island

The first Monkey Island game in the series. I played this one through on the Amiga and still play it on the emulator to this day. The humour was amazing and the interface with all the keywords on the bottom worked really well.

    Metal Gear Solid

Personally this has to be the PS1's finest hour. Brought a whole new meaning to the stealth / action genre and in a league of its own. (Still not a patch on Thief 2 really though but enyoyable nontheless) Very involved story with really long cutscenes that were a bit annoying at times except the one in the snow where you finally kill Sniper Wolf.

    Giants : Citizen Kabuto

The humour in this game really done alot for me. Also the end of the first level where he plants the Union Jack flag. It was 3 separate stories and very different play modes for each of the characters. So well put together and the graphics were fantastic, It ran in 1024x768 on my 533 Celeron and Voodoo 3 card at the time.

Have to add a number 6 to this also !

    Mafia

This game didn't get the recognition it deserves at all. A whole city was built up from scratch for it with traffic and people everywhere you went. Story on it was very involved and pieced together perfectly with the main character telling parts of the story and you acting them out, you got a real feeling for the characters in this game and the end is so moving. This game was and is a masterpiece and the PS2 owners out there will soon be able to play it.

    I think mine are...

    Total Annihilation
    Command & Conquer
    Flashback
    Operation Flashpoint
    GTA

In no particular order. There are lots of other games which I really liked and thought they deserved a spot, but normally only things I found replayable (without a HUGE gap in time) got a spot.

Capcom VS SNK 2 best street fighterish game ever. im not gona sall it a SNKish game seeing as Capcom made it. ill wait until i play snk vs capcom chaos to decide on that.

Final Fantasy 7 was the better one but i put most time into 9

Sonic 2/3 So many childhood hours spent on this game give that hedchog a grammy

ISS Pro Evolution although this game cost me a control pad (tantrums) its still the best in its class.

Super Mario All Stars BUT just so you all know. SONIC OWNS MARIO

Well, good to see a few other people listing Manic Miner, and a few real classics on their lists; I expected a horde of kiddies giving it 'BMX XXX is teh rulez!!11!!1'.

A few questionable choices in there to be honest... Counter Strike one of the 5 best games of all time? Hmm...

Also, Super Mario All-Stars is a collection of games, not a game in itself.

No votes for Mario Bros 3, Mario World or Mario 64 yet I see? I thought they'd be top of plenty of lists...

well a certain plumber is doing VERY well in the top 25 list..

and BMX XXX was a great laff to play if you just messed about - tho i suspect the Matt Hoffman BMX it's based on would be a somwhat purer form of the game...

Should think so as well. Super Mario is the computer games character.

Indeed, but 'a bit of a laff to play if you just messed about' is not 'the best game ever'.

I'd say in no particular order:

Metal Gear Solid (PS1): The game that defined that generation of consoles for me. It really showed what could be done with the hardware with a bit of creativity. The gameplay was excellent and so was the story. I loved it so much that I played through it about 6 times.

Pro Evolution Soccer 1/2/3 (PS2/PC): Missing a lot of licenses, awful commentary, poor presenatation - yet still the best football game ever made by a long, long way. Unlike FIFA, it plays like real football and even better - it requires skill to play. It's very much like a beat 'em up in a way. Everything requires a series of key presses (no "spin past the defender" button, ala FIFA) and requires expert timing. Beautiful.

Quake World (PC): Another flawed vey superb game. The single player ain't up to much (hence my nomination for Quake World) but multiplayer is just amazing. Superb level design, a great range of balanced weapons and possibly the best network code ever. Easily playable over a modem. What's more, the mods were superb. Team Fortress was my particular favourite and I used to spend hours every evening playing it.

GTA3/Vice City (PS2/PC/Xbox): Just like MGS defined the PS1-generation of consoles, GTA3/Vice City defined the current crop of consoles for me. Vice City especially showed what could be done with a video game - great open gameplay, an amazing selection of music, great voice-acting (for once!), funny, compelling.

Civilization 2 (PC): This game ate up many an hour of my life. Very well thought out and very addictive.

    5. Zelda: a link to the past
    4. Mario64
    3. Goldeneye (never played a game so much before)
    2. Mario Kart (snes)
    1. Sim City (the original)

Sim City is my fave though because its what i did for 6 years of IT lessons at school i had the best city , it kept me from having to pay attention to my incompotent IT teacher. It was close between goldeneye and mario kart as these are the best games i have ever played multiplayer but mario kart got it for being older and still as good

    5: Resident Evil : PSX

"You have now entered the world of survival horror" ... this game gave me the rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishs playing it in the dark @ 1am when I was 12 ... me and my mate used to play it while we drank (underage WOO) ... excellent stuff

4: Super Mario Kart : SNES

Unbelievable multiplayer action, kept me going for years. Now I'm looking forward to playing Double Dash, as the N64 version wasnt as good as the original... and shes called PRINCESS NOT PEACH!!

    -1-: Tomb Raider : PSX

This game is equal to the next two cos there all excellent. Tomb Raider got me started on the 3D gaming route, excellent graphics for 1996, excellent music.. it immersed u in the game and the levels were great. TR2 was good also, but 3/4/5 etc just went downhill and were barely even in tombs!!

    -1-: Turrican II - Amiga 500

Best side scrolling shooter EVER made. This game as the best soundtrack too, Chris Huelsbeck you are a GOD! ... This had sum unreal 2d graphics and the weapons were SOOO cool.

-1-: Final Fantasy VII : PSX

... What is there to say we dont already know? this game is UNBELIEVABLY BIG.. and Im sad now I've completed it... I WANT... I DEMAND A REMAKE!!!

.... number 6 which doesnt make it yet, but might do in years to come is "The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind"

Ah, Turican. Loads of old games I'd need a top 10 to include.

Anyone remember the Dizzy games on the ZX Spectrum?

Now they were proper classics. Then we have JetPac, Chuckie Egg, PaperBoy...

    Those were the days.

Hmm, the more I think about it, the more I am not sure... Thinking back to when we first got a PC, there are others that I played an awful lot. Like...

Digger, the original one by windmill.
Jason Jupiter, a quirky little ascii platformer
All of the EGA sierra Quest games, especially kings quest 3.
    Felix, boulder dash stylee game
Ooo and Alley Cat! Needs no explaining!
