I haven't seen such an awful bevelled button header graphic since my degree in '99....seriously, that's horrible. If you like that highlight effect, then do a gradiant fill and mirror, don't use a button tool....

You shouldn't hard code anything for a specific browser. If you're serious about doing the website, it should work for everyone. It's a pain in the arse, but that's how it works.

What resolution do you design at? 'Cause those menu links across the top are massive at 1024x768, so they must be hhhhuuuugggeeee at 800x600.....They look big at 1920x1200 (and I'm still getting that background too narrow for my screen issue).

    Hope this helps.

And I can't believe no-one has asked, but what the hell is Korfball?

    Korfball?

Korfball is a fast-paced team sport that originates in the Netherlands. At first glance, the game appears similar to basketball or netball, in that two teams compete to put a ball through a basket (the korf). Korfball is designed so that speed, skill, and agility take precedence over brute strength or height. The most unique aspect of Korfball, however, is that men and women compete on an equal basis---Korfball is the world's only mixed sex sport!
Nothing has been hard coded for any browser, what made you think that it had???

    That did.

Thanks for the info on Korfball.....is it a new thing?

Ahh ok, I thought you meant hardcoding for IE or Firefox...the site should now work fine on huge resolutions.

Korfball is about 100/110 years old but has only been played in the UK for 60. We're still a pretty small sport but numbers are growing pretty quickly---especially among students. Its a great game to pick up at Uni because nearly everyone else who goes along will be a beginner too---unlike say Rugby or Hockey where if you're not great to start with theres not much point joining the Uni club!

Most Korfball in the UK is based in London/Kent/East Anglia but there are also succesful clubs in Yorkshire, Nottingham, Scotland, Wales, and the North East. Its great fun---if you get a chance to try it out I recommend it!!

Sorry, my mistake, should have said 'resolution' not 'browser'. Apologies.

I'm still getting the big white bar, a la Clunk, down the right hand side.

I have updated and changed a few things based on people's suggestions. The big white bar should have gone---I changed the css as suggested.

    Cheers

Although you're displaying the W3Schools Valid code image, your code is NOT valid:

    <head> requires a title tag <title> else it's invalid.

(Edit - Referring to the NEWS frame)

Other than that looked fine on FF at 1024 * 768

Personally I'd prefer to see the whole thing centred - too much empty space on the right hand side.

Also your links. I read something about eye-tracking software that showed people looked along the headers before looking down the side. You have top and left navigation and you've already said it'll be expanded but is it necessary to duplicate?

Why not have essentials/quick links at the foot of the page - Contact, Home, Who etc - and the key points across the top (maybe even using drop down menus) then you can expand the text area in the main frame.

I know a small bit about designing and building pages and I'm one stage behind you with regards publishing so I can appreciate it takes some balls to ask for feedback - hopefully I've been helpfully critical

The purple will just carry on then. Speaking of which, crop pagebackground.gif to 1px high, it'd look no different but the filesize would be ~500 bytes rather than 40kb.
I was just about to post "make the background the same colour as the end of the gradient", it's a good suggestion, will make it look a lot neater.

I would however make the background image a bit higher than 1px, I've found mainly on older, slower PCs they take so long to tile 1px a thousand times that it defeats the speed gain of downloading a bigger file, and looks a bit odd. I tend to go for somewhere around 20 - 50 px.

    Fixed.

RE: the navigation, I'm happy with it where it is, but I might make it a little smaller.
