As far as I understand it, if you order the boxset you get the digital version on 10 Oct and the real thing ships to you on 3 Dec.

I think it's a great experiment, and will produce the best data available about how much people really value music. Everyone knows that Radiohead is into producing their own sound rather than fitting into a pop stereotype.

Its a great experiment but I cant see it being a true represntation of the music buyers. Radiohead fans are usually pretty loyal to the band so I reckon are more likely to pay a bit more than fans of many other bands. Not to take away from other bands but radiohead fans are pretty devoted

I paid £8. I love Radiohead, (even the new stuff).

Radiohead - Officially the biggest unsigned band in the world.
    How funny is that!

They do seam to protect them with a terminal intensity.

I do find it intresting thou how people arrive at valuing music. Often justifing pure and simple theft.

I would love to have access to their buyers database, overlayed with some 'tesco type' of shopping information and their tax info. Gawd, i'm becoming a quant geek

    Did you reply with something witty like;

Why nothing? Why not even 50p? Do you not think that their work is worth something? I find that attitude towards other peoples' intellectual rights disgusting.

I hate the pride he's showing in the fact that he's got a hard working bands music for nothing - especially one who have gone AGAINST the grain, taken a massive risk and said - hey you want it, give us what you can afford.

Re: Radiohead - How come no one's posted this yet?

If it's an album worth owning, I'll buy it on CD when it's released next year. Seeing as it's available on download now, has anyone listened to it and what's it like?
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

    I can't agree.

I'm as firm a believer in copyright protection as you'll likely find on this forum. I've argued for it again and again and again.

BUT what a rights holder does with their rights is entirely up to them.

If they wanted to provide an option that allows what boils down to an option to have the album for nothing, then that's their right. They must have foreseen that a percentage of downloaders would do exactly that. If they wanted to impose a minimum price, then they should have done so. But if they had done so, then they would have foregone the publicity generated from the "free" option.

You could argue, cynically, that letting some people download for nothing probably means that mostly they'll be people that wouldn't have paid anyway, but that MIGHT download it, like it and then buy that or other albums.

But whether it's a cynical commercial risk or not, they said people can pay what they like, and must then take the good with the bad.

Personally, I'm not much of a radiohead fan. But even I might be tempted to get around to downloading this and trying it, as it's "free". And who knows, I might end up buying their stuff as a result. But I wouldn't be buying it if I had to pay for the download. But .... if I download and don't like it, I'll delete it.

In my opinion, this is a perfectly healthy attitude towards IP rights, because the decision to allow free download is that of the rights holder. They can then hardly moan if some people choose to take them at their word.

And if other big bands follow suit, this really could spell the end for big record companies. And I don't have a problem with that. If bands get to to their own thing, and make it or break it based on talent rather than marketing budget and record companies get cut out of the middle, tough luck on record companies.

But either way, it's Radiohead's free choice to do it this way, for better or worse. Good luck to them.

Exactly.. it's just a PR stunt intentionally or not.
Besides, they don't make a great deal from record sales these days, they probably make more from the world tours they go on.

If they offer it for free then so be it, that's there problem. If I like it, I'll purchase the hard copy to go with my collection, notice that the cd has bonus songs! -so they weren't giving it all away!

Like all their albums since KidA, this will take some time to get into, but feels more accessible than Hail to the Thief. I quite enjoyed it on first listen, though someone needs to do them a favour by breaking into their studio and stealing all their fuzz boxes.

I listened to the first 5 tracks and was very impressed,
Nude was a standout as was track 2 (very energetic!).

Will listen properly and critique later!
