    Re: Best medieval weapon...?

When I was at college a friend and I were going to write an essay called Spoons in the Crusades and link all the major happenings in the said campaigns to the presence (or lack thereof) of spoons. We had a Professor who was the only man in the world who could make a Viking raid boring and we were going to submit it to him. We never did, of course.

    Bloody students.

And another vote for a crossbow. If they were bad ass enough to be banned in the middle ages, then they're bad ass enough for me. After all they single handedly brought about the end of guys in armour on horses dominating the battle field. 'Nuff said.

Oooh! Highly debatable that last bit! Good (read the most expensive) plate armour was proofed against strikes from the ammo of crossbows, 'longbows' and early firearms by the later medieval period.

Crossbows could be very powerful weapons but were slow to load and had a reputation that their prods were prone to breakage too. One of the advantages were that they were easy to learn to use (like firearms) unlike the high-poundage war bows that the English used.

Yeah, but only the top brass could afford the top notch armour. So I give you fifty peasants with crossbows to take out the pleb level knights, then drag the generals off their horses and beat them to death with the butt of the crossbow.

I hadn't really drawn a comparison between crossbows and firearms previously, so that was quite a nice little summation. Ta.

Spear and crossbow. Easy to use, good reach and range, very versitile (at least the spear is).

Oh yeah, and a good knife or dagger for when the enemy gets a bit too close.
