Hexus really has some stick fetishists!!
Ah, but are they all sticks? There appear to be some twigs flying around too
Really good link pollaxe, read something similar by another blade smith, but looking at it from the metallurgy stand point. His appraisal as somebody making swords is that the pattern welded European blades are just as advanced as Japanese manufactured blades, and as with all tools designed to do a specific job. Theres a link to it someplace on the britishBlades forums (go have a look in the makers gallery).
Also an important note, the laws on buying certain swords is in the process of being changed, theres a lot of info on britishblades about it.
Not sure what the law is but it would be almost impossible to enforce a law requiring swords or knives to be of a certain length/weight etc. Just look in the average kitchen and you'll find a knife or two that is quite able to inflict serious damage.
I was up at my mates forge at the weekend and he was putting a fuller into a blade that must have been 2ft long. Infact my brother used one of his swords to cut his wedding cake! Anyone with a bit of knowledge, practice and a very small forge can make knives and swords.

I wanted a Samurai set, Lau wont let me get one tho as she reckons me n Joel aren't to be trusted with things when we get drunk..
Not sure what she means tho, maybe the Joel vs.... video's on youtube might have something to do with it...

DO you actually think that they look sensible at these kinds of laws?? The banned combat knives a couple of years ago, over night all combat knives became survival knives and consequently totally legal.
Heres a bit about the samurai sword ban BBC NEWS | UK | Ban on imitation Samurai swords also Samurai-style swords - British Blades :: Custom Knife Making
Heres a FAQ on owning and carrying knives in general
The Law FAQ - British Blades :: Custom Knife Making
And a bit about legal every day carry in the UK The Legal Slipjoint Sticky - British Blades :: Custom Knife Making
In general you can own most sharp pointy things apart from flick knives, butterfly knives, and a few other specifically banned items. But you cant stroll around the streets with them. Theres is a provision in UK law for the public to carry sub 3 inch non locking folders, often referred to as UK EDC (every day carry). For more info the law section of British blades is the best source of info on UK law, some guides are prepared by lawyers, and theres an ask a cop section. Personally I always carry a swiss army knife as I use it a lot in my job, its also 100% legall to have in my pocket while walking down the street. For me its just another tool, along with a pen, micro torch, etc.
Id still win with a trout

Sadly no - at least not in Europe - I think it came in via cocoa beans to Spain from the New World. I'd imagine late 1520s onwards, I don't think it came to Britain until much later (17th century some time.) Of course they had it in South America much earlier but IIRC it was mixed with chili! Yuck.
nice thread..... very nice.
I'm a two weapon man in Medieval stlyes of battle
I'm a Mace and a Misericord man
Mace is all about smashing, denting, bone braking and if possible, hitting helmets so hard they'll never come OFF your head, cos they'll bend into your skull.
In theory an armour puncturing version like this
but I'm not strong enough to pull it back OUT of a punctured breast plate, so I think it's a more tradional one for me:
And in my left hand....the pointy, evil, chain mail piercing, armour chink finding Misericord
