Ultimately, house prices in the countryside will crash hardest if people are having to spend more on fuel to get to work then on their mortgage.
    YES! I can hope.

They don't have to get the money from elsewhere at all - as fuel prices rise so does the amount of tax collected by the government. Increasing fuel duty this year is just stupid.

    For once I'm in agreement

Fuel prices needed to rise IMO, and duty was a good way of doing that, but if the cost is increasing anyway then there's no need to increase duty proportion any more.

Ecologically and in terms of creating a fairer tax system - I believe a higher price would encourage more economical driving, more car sharing, more alternative transport use, put demand on more economical cars, while reducing the taxation for just owning a car and not using it much, or any other less fair taxation systems. But I've already discussed this at length in other threads (and probably this one previously).

    Re: Petrol Prices :angst:

without been a harbinger of doom, if you think its bad now, give it another 10 years.

    fuel is limited.

    population is increasing.

populations demand for fuel per head is increasing.

fuel price will go up to compensate. It will go up to the point where biofuels are the only alternative, which despite having bio in the name so sounding all cute fluffly and mayor ken, are quite nasty because to pay for those, you have to be willing to pay more for the farmer, than if he would grow food (remeber starving people are getting more and more).

So quit whining, i'm on a more than most wage, and i use public transport exclusively, souly because i think the alternative is far too expensive. As soon as more people do, the more bus services you'll find to your train station rach.

Motorbike tests look to be the way forward and a cheap solution to this issue of the prices of petrol rising each week.

    Either that or if you work locally - I would suggest using something to get to and from work ;

    Re: Petrol Prices :angst:

I'm getting into the habit of cycling to work, plus I am driving more economically when I have to (ie 60mph on the motorways) my consumption has gone down, thus costs down. However to fill a tank up is the £60 mark. If it continues, people are not going to be able to afford a car, and jobs will suffer. Either find somewhere local which you can walk/cycle to (I think 5 mile cycle is good if you can do it!) or where local transport is better.

I am actually seriously thinking about shelling out for a decent bike.

    Re: Petrol Prices :angst:

still much better value to drive than take the train, though.

    for example:

if i take the train to work, and the wife does too, that's £9.10 each for a return, or £18.20 a day

if i take the car, then there's a basic use of about 50-55 miles a day, and at about 40MPG, that means i use about 6 litres a day of fuel. fuel prices near me vary from 111.9 to 116.9, so that's £7 a day in petrol. now, to apply some fudge factors. add £1.50 for park-and-ride bus use (i drop the wife at the p&r), and 1 day's worth of insurance (about £1.40) and 1 day's worth of servicing (about £0.66), 1 day of tax (£0.30), and 1 day of parking (£0.08), and the grand total for driving to work instead of taking the train is, for the pair of us, £10.94. if i fudge it further and add in the daily cost of my car loan repayments (really not a fair indicator), of about £7.80, then it's the same price as taking the train - except i have a car at the end of it, and don't rely on crappy timetables. less pessimistic figures on mileage & MPG lead to more friendly prices.

Im already paying 1.30ish for my petrol, 1.40 for diesel, on the Isle of Man. Its a pain in the arse as it only costs .025p per liter to get it over.

And for me too - ignoring the inconvenience that 4 hours a day of commuting would add/lack of reliability - the costs just don't add up for public transport when you're not in the city. It's no good just making me pay more money - if the alternatives aren't viable then i've got no choice in the first place. I pity those on min. wages who have to find the money for the same sort of reasons. Car sharing is (as far as I know) not even promoted in the UK by those-who-shouldn't-be-in-power.

I didn't realise that. Who was it who decided to create the carpool lanes that are being built/trialed then?
