Ah well, it's nothing too interesting and - despite comments here - it wasn't the Penny Black or Queen Victoria's thong that I designed! If anyone says otherwise I shall stick pins in their feet and either send them to the workhouse or up the chimneys.
Anyway, it was some kind of stamp they used to use in franking which carried a message/warning about keeping your dog under control when the postie visited and featured a line art dog's head. My Uncle worked for Royal Mail and got me to design it when I was a kid. The only guideline he gave me was that it musn't look like a particular breed of dog and it had to be a mongrel. It ended up having something like a Golden Retriever's muzzle and a Spaniel's ears. (It looked better than it sounds and this was a fair while ago but not around the time of the Jarrow Marches, I'm only 36, thank you very much!)
It was only supposed to be used somewhere locally but it spread across most of the country, friends and relatives used to send envelopes from all over the place. It was still being used in fairly recent years, though I can't honestly remember the last time I saw an envelope with it on (and I don't have a copy.) I earned the princely sum of an envelope with about a dozen "Post Office" balloons and badges. Obviously, I sold these for crack as soon as I could.
Excellent, full & frank account, thanks for satisfying our curiosity. fancy not keeping a copy though.

It would be a whole lot better if his first name was Arthur...
