    More front page tweaks

We have done some more front page changes....

    - You can now see when the site had new content last put on it

    - You can now filter by either content type or by category (or both!)

    - You can now see the price and buy direct from SCAN from your query.

So - it now looks like this:

Say you only want to see reviews:

Now you want to see all '2d/3d graphics' related content

    Re: More front page tweaks

I browse hexus in a window of varying sizes, depending what else I'm working on at the time - it is always at least 800w though.

What's weird is that it starts off looking fine* as it's loading, then suddenly the blue bar expands and pushes everything else down.

    eg:
it's like this for a second or two:

Then goes to the earlier screenshot.

*I say fine.. the side bars still jump too high and the advert is being weird, but I've mentioned that before.

    Re: More front page tweaks

I'm getting used to the layout now, i don't miss the old one atall, to be honest I can't even remember what it looked like. To me it seems as though hexus has always been like this - or is it just the web monkeys doing little tweaks so we don't notice, then after a week we go "hang on! that wasn't there before..."

from my perspective about the 'category' list in the new filter thingy, some of the categories are a bit confusing, 'core logic' and 'thermal control', i have had to click them to see what they actually are. still none the wiser though. but i suppose thats what hexus is for, so we can all learn new and wonderful things. looking forward to the bigger changes planned for the coming weeks.

as for kalniels problem - i think it might be something to do with the Internet Explorer web page coding, or a update you have missed, it looks as though you are still using IE6, perhaps DR and the team haven't coded it properly. i only think that because when i alter my screen sizes this happens.... IE7 by the way, plus i used to get the exact same problem, but after a couple of updates it went away.

and that direct buy from SCAN thing... just something i'm wondering about. what about a link to YOYOTECH or BIG POCKETS as well, seen as you host forums for them aswell. I don't mean to pry or anything, if you have a different forum hosting arrangement with them then thats your business, but it is something i have been wondering about lately.

Buy links are a separate arrangement.

As for Kalneil's issue, I have a copy of IE6 on my devbox and it doesn't do that. The 'three items per line' does break when you get to a really low window width, but it fails reasonably gracefully.

It's coded sympathetic to people who have no choice over using IE6 (work machines etc), but I don't go out of my way to achieve IE6 perfection - it's just not worth it any more.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Re: More front page tweaks

fair enough steve, i think i will leave the more techy answers to more smarter people than me.

and the buy links thing, i only wondered because i'm kind of learning to set up a business and my mind is thinking about those sort of things at the moment.

i'm still loking forward to more updates. keep em coming. and i will keep my strange answers coming also. (you love them really don't you?)

    Re: More front page tweaks

I've come across as cynical before, and in the not to distant past too, possibly too strongly, but am I the only one disappointed with just how commercial Hexus.net is getting of late?

Take the main page. In my Firefox it looks superb. Very clean and concise with the articles and things you actually want to read standing out. I used IE7 on another machine a few days and was shocked at just how throttled everything looked. It's totally suffocated in massive adverts. I'm aware that one argument may be that due to the thousands of Firefox users who run Adblock, that you're forced to make up revenue from those who don't, but is it just me, or are those who don't run such blockers getting punished? I'm happy to admit to running Adblock, despite your banner on every page, but you also have to consider why people don't remove your site from that blacklist too.

I've been rather vocal in the past on just how close Hexus are to certain sponsors too. Don't get me wrong - pretty much every order possible I make with Scan, and as such the company I work for makes nearly all IT hardware orders through them too, but I don't want to see articles and reviews with links to them at every given opportunity. Occasional links on where to buy at the end of a review is fine, but front page links on every relevant item is way too far for my personal liking.

Perhaps a better example is the occasionally blatant Intel loving. Now it may be certain reviewers/editors opinions rather than the staff as a whole, but it appears that at any chance that is presented, AMD are denounced. They're hardly in a wonderful position, but come on... they're not that bad and it's hardly a balanced stance you're taking at present. I'm not an AMD fanboy (I've not bought one of their products for one of my own machines since C2, like most), but I'm also fully aware that every product they make is almost as good.

I know the employees of companies have to make a living, and Hexus are still the primary review site for me, and the only technical forum I regularly visit, but it seems things are going a little in the wrong direction for my own tastes.

I realise half of what I've said is a bit out of place here, but it's better than making several posts on the matter.

To end on a more positive note, I'm coming around more and more to the front-page layout. I still maintain it's less attractive to newer visitors, but it does seem more efficient to the rest of us.

    Re: More front page tweaks

"I've come across as cynical before, and in the not to distant past too, possibly too strongly, but am I the only one disappointed with just how freeloading internet users are getting of late?

Take the use of adblock. Some websites really do have excessive and frankly dangerous levels of adverts and hidden referral links, so you can see why it's so popular. But do those sites that keep things restrained deserve to be punished?

I've been rather vocal in the past on just how charging for website access too. Don't get me wrong, free content is wonderful, but with the increasing usage of adblock, what other methods exist? Occasional referral links to shops just get slammed by the readership, so what other method will cover my personal costs in running a site?

Perhaps a better example is charging companies for good reviews. I mean, with everyone expecting content to be free, who cares if we're not impartial? Now it may be that reviewers and editors work hard to make judgements based upon the best evidence available rather than fanboy opinions, but readers want dramatic conclusions and it would be such easy money!

I know internet users don't care at all about bandwidth costs, especially in this day and age of internet video. They can't be expected to understand such things when their own services claim 'unlimited' bandwidth. But readers are our primary source of income and some use us so heavily we could easily fleece them.

I realise half of what I've said is a bit out of place here, but it's better than making several posts on the matter."

    Someone still uses IE6?

Could be the cause of your problems perhaps? Seems fine in Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 here.

And yup, it is IE6 as forced by work, as IE7 still isn't considered baseline by MS.

Maybe it's some kind of activeX/script blocker type thing? We allow adverts as you can see, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some other security filtering going on.
